A personal note from YSI Young Spirit Host Carol Kajorinne from Thunder Bay ON:
I would like to share a behind the scenes look at what it has been like to travel as a Spirit Circle host, awaiting the next circle here in the Soo.
Wed. June 10
As the airplane descended, I felt a unexpected sigh of relief. It was as if I was flying home after spending days in Toronto, exploring the space for hours on end. Peering out over the forest, and riding in Candace's car I felt grounded. I enjoyed the city of Toronto (and always do) and of course the Toronto Spirit Circle, but I find peace and comfort in the smaller towns and northern communities and forests.
My favourite moment outside of the Young Spirit Circle in TO was kicking the ball around at Trinity Park with some random dudes yelling "come play with us!" After the Spirit Circle, I found myself yearning for connection to another being. (and that's a good thing right!) As we kicked the ball, a small number of words were shared about our roots. Introductions were shared at the end, as we parted for the night. We all were just happy being there.
Hearing of art projects centred around sports made me really see how sports can be a way to exchange positive energy, genuine connection, and build community. It wasn't about trumping the other or who could run the fastest, but was about breathing, exercising and sharing time. I was so grateful to have their ball roll along my path.
Now it's Wed. evening and I'm really excited to be here in the Soo... Already I have connected to some amazing Artists, Allies and Changemakers after attending a Youth Social Entrepreneurship event. I am exhausted from holding meaningful conversation and I can already feel the positive pulse of this place.
It's interesting how things come full circle. I met someone a few years ago through an OAC gathering ("Placemaking: Artists and Community") held in Sioux Lookout. As soon as I felt her presence, I was reminded of the deep connection we shared, and aspirations to collaborate, joining northern communities through creative projects. Now, I laugh as I realize we are both involved with YSI. Perhaps YSI will be the vessel used to bring our talents together to make our ideas shared a reality? One can only hope. Onto the next Circle! Can’t wait to hear your voice and feel your spirit Saulte Ste. Marie!
