I have to say she's a tough act to follow and editing the best of from this amazing community is no easy task. My selections for this week involved images that made me want to be in the moment with our photographers. Whether it's watching fireworks in Vancouver, riding a train in Sri Lanka or watching brown bears in Alaska feast on salmon these images made me want to be in these locations capturing these moments alongside our talented Your Shot photographers."

"As I look back at my edit for this week's selections I see a reoccuring theme of 'power.' Nature is powerful, human beings are powerful, and as always, photography is powerful. Photography gives us the opportunity to travel all over the globe in moments. It gives us the freedom to see things we might never see in person like a wildfire in Colorado, a comical moment during the Vietnam War, grizzly bears in their natural habitat or an aerial shot over a coal ash slurry from a thermal power plant. It offers us knowledge and experience of a moment we otherwise wouldn't know."

"Having the opportunity to look through the daily uploads from the Your Shot community is a dream. Every day I can travel from my desk in Washington D.C. to every corner of the world, from ocean to desert, from iconic landmarks to the comfort of someone's kitchen. I see things I have never seen before like a surreal scene of a football (also known as soccer) game with icebergs as the natural backdrop or be up close and personal with a shark feeding right in front of me.

"Photography has an incredible power to change our view or learn more about a topic. The moment I saw Huey Kidd's powerful portrait of the woman who underwent a double mastectomies, my breath was taken away. Though this woman is unnamed the strength and courage she exudes through her portrait is enough to knock you off your feet. This woman wants her story to be shared for education and awareness.

Photography gives her this power. She can team up with a photographer who is willing to share the image and create a conversation around the disease she endured. Photography isn't about the photographers who make the images. Photography is not about recognition, or likes, or awards. It is about the folks who are changed by it."

"Hello! This is Matt Adams, tagging in for Kristen McNicholas for this weeks Photos of the Week. I had a tough edit to face down as there were some excellent uploads from the Your Shot community. I can see there were many submissions that were being prepared for the Rethinking Portraiture assignment as well as The Best Photos of August 2018. My edit features images that made me pause and think about how I wanted to learn so much more about the photographer and story behind the image. Personally, I love telling stories. Whether it's with friends, or family, or meeting someone for the first time I love to share tales of things I witnessed or that directly happened to me. I hope you enjoy all these stories I found from our Your Shot photographers. Also this week’s ender is a great dedication to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin!"

"I can only sum up this week's series as 'surprising.' I saw fireworks disguised as abstract flowers, almost fell off the deck of a boat and stepped into what I could only describe as a Russian countryside movie setting.

I share the photos that delight me, leave me wanting to look more. Sometimes I'll see pictures that stick with me throughout the week. Of course, there is a higher chance of your photos being featured if you are sharing with out community regularly. If you haven't uploaded recently, I encourage you to take a creative risk and share it with us! We all have something to learn from each other. You can get inspiration from our Editor's Notes, but you can also get inspiration from your fellow community members who consistently upload and seek feedback.

I learn something new from pictures every day so I challenge you all to do the same! Come teach us something, give us a new perspective or simply surprise us."

"I finish every week more inspired than the week before. I finish every week thinking about the different corners of Earth I was able to visit for a few fleeting moments. I get to visit the jungles of Uganda, the depths of the ocean, scale seawalls with climbers and hang out with sleepy big cats. As always, I'm incredibly thankful for this community sharing their worlds with me."
