Right? Because the fact is that he never really saw her at her worst. I believe him when he says he won’t mind it, but still, Regina knows that she’s dangerous, and the curse is likely to remove whatever restraint she had even back in the bad old days. She doesn’t want to inflict that on people she loves.

I’ll admit, I thought Emma taking her brother was the best solution at that moment. He’s a tiny baby; if something goes wrong while he’s locked away somewhere, there’s no way he could call for help. And what if someone with less-than-stellar intentions finds him? Nah, better to leave him with someone they know will keep her wits about her and who can kick some considerable ass when necessary. (Also, I thought the whole point of the mirror splinters was that they’d get everywhere, no matter where you were?)

I’m willing to forgive the Arendelle stuff in part, because this really was the important flashback. Though, like I said, they could probably just have spaced it out over three regular episodes and left out all the others.

Oddly enough, I wasn’t overly taken with Regina’s scenes this episode. Yes, there was some nice “relationship maintenance” going on in the background (basically reminding the audience that yes, she knows all these people and talks to them when she’s not stuck in her vault, researching stuff), but nothing that really stood out. To me, this was very much Emma’s episode. Which I don’t mind--it’s an ensemble show, after all, and I have the feeling that Regina will feature rather prominently in the second half of the season (assuming that’s when the Operation Mongoose stuff hits)

Yeah. And nobody can tell me Regina would have said “nope, Emma ruined my relationship, let her freeze to death”. I mean, she may have thought it for a moment (nobody’s perfect, and she does have something of a vindictive streak), but not hardly in a serious manner. And it’s not like there wouldn’t have been an episode. They could have had her (or Rumple, since they already bothered the man during his honeymoon) try it, go “well, the ice is re-forming faster than I could melt it without blowing up the whole wall” and look for another solution. Done! Nothing really changes, and you can still have the awesome freezer-conversation (which I liked a lot and wouldn’t want to miss for the world)

I’m really not a big fan of the “oh no, let them have their ~space~” attitude about grief and dealing with it. Yes, sometimes people need to be alone, but it’s just so much easier to say “not now, please, I need some time” than to ask for company when nobody is offering. And dealing with the sudden end of a relationship like that is a form of grieving. So, to bring this back to your actual point: I was really happy when Henry came home; it was such a quiet little scene, and I think that’s what made it so perfect.

Yeah, the thing with the dagger... ::sigh:: I doubt this is the narrative intent here, but if I were writing this, it would be a sign of Rumple demanding too much of himself too quickly. Buddy, you just got out of that cage. Maybe keep the dagger around for a bit to get used to the idea and then think about handing it over to people. Linking your handing it to Belle to your marriage like this is a very sweet gesture, but it also puts a lot of pressure on you both. ...yes, I do talk to fictional characters on occasion. Doesn’t everyone?

As for Regina--I’ll do you one better. She was without her usual support system and instead had Sidney, who may snark at her occasionally, but usually supports (read: enables) all of her worst plans without hesitation. Well, except the “wait, how are you going to do that?” hesitation, which isn’t really helpful.

I’m not sure why they listened to Hook, either. It’s not like he knows her particularly well, is it? And “nothing good ever came from pushing that woman”? Really? Like nothing good came from Snow pushing her to put her heart back in? Or Henry pushing her to let him go when she was spiralling? Or, again, Snow pushing her to talk about Cora when all Regina wanted to do was crawl into a corner and be left alone? Sure, pal, whatever you say. </sarcasm>

And I read your essay there; I agree that Regina has the right to feel betrayed. The problem is her lashing out at Emma like this. Not saying it’s not understandable, but that doesn’t make it right.

But what stood out to me was your mention that she probably didn’t have any friends while growing up, because 1) I never even realised that, and 2) holy crap, that makes so much sense! Also explains a lot about how she interacts with people in general...

Thank you! : D As I may have mentioned, I’m always happy to enable some good, old-fashioned nostalgia.

Confession time, I may be one of the least visually-oriented people you will ever meet. Unless someone points me at a camera parallel and says “hey, look!”, I’m not likely to notice. (Exceptions for cases where the original scene is burned into my brain because of accompanying emotions, but that’s neither here nor there *g*) But now that you mention it, I can totally see the similarities between the three, and it makes thematic sense to connect them, too, I think. Both for the parallels as well as the contrasts.

And oh, same with the flailing. Just happy hands for a full minute or so, because that was such a well-done scene. (As an aside, I loved the fact that Emma set up the kiss by giving Henry the book and thereby basically “giving him back” to Regina; I know it was the only right thing to do, but we also know that she struggled with that immensely, so it was very satisfying to see) And her utter astonishment afterwards. Like she just couldn’t believe she had that in her. Or that Henry could possibly feel the same about her. Just... ::very happy sigh:: Made all the amnesia angst worth it, I’d say.

I agree that the difference between OQ in the Enchanted Forest and Storybrooke is probably mostly down to Henry’s influence. No, he didn’t remember her for most of the time, but at least Regina could see and spend time with him. Being separated by his lack of memories must have still been painful, but the show made sure to let us know that they still had a connection. I think that was the spark of hope she needed to be ready to take her chances with Robin. (And giggly, newly-in-love Regina is an absolute gift from the heavens. She’s adorable.)

My read on the arrow scene was thata, Rumple...

Yup, yup, yup, that was (almost) precisely what I came up with, too. If Robin hadn’t given up the heart, things would have gotten ugly, and fast. (Though, for bonus horror points, I don’t think he would have let the arrow hit anything vital. Not on the first go, I mean) Rumple’s whole dialogue during that scene basically boils down to “please, I’m begging you, don’t make me do this”--he may be playing up the “scary and growly” aspect, but he’s probably the third-most terrified person in this scene.

And I agree that Zelena would have enjoyed forcing him to do this. I was just wondering: did she think of that herself or did he think of it and had to act on it due to a more general “do whatever it takes” command. I mean, both are awful; it’s really just idle musings.

The fact that Cora didn’t even leave her baby around actual people, but literally out in the woods really drives home her thought process. “How can I make this least troublesome for myself?” By the way, I think the top 10 of “worst parents” are pretty easy, but after that, the rungs are very close together, with potential for changes in ranking after any flashback involving one of them. Even if nobody in the production team actually had a horrible childhood, someone was definitely exorcising some demons here...

Huh. Never thought about the lack of a heart playing a role in Regina’s willingness to be... well, reasonable this episode, but it does make sense. Though I think the earlier flashbacks showed that she was getting to a place where she could have those conversations, anyway. Maybe missing her heart just made it easier?

I am happy for SWEN about Lana's comment on SQ and fanfic. But what is the difference between this one and Sean's comment in terms of family-appropriation? People then said that Sean disrespected Lana, now CSers are using this argument to say that then Lana was disrespecting JMo. I don't think she did, but I am confused, because are the two cases so different? I do feel there is a dichotomy between attacking Sean with great fervor and defending Lana with the same vehemency.

Well, I didn’t at any point claim that Sean was disrespecting Lana. My argument about Sean’s comments were entirely about venue and I said that I wasn’t entirely thrilled with Lana’s either. But let’s be clear... Lana’s comments and Sean’s were not equivalent. He said that Robin and Regina were having sex. She made an innuendo in an incomplete sentence.

As for the “disrespecting JMo” argument it is based on the idea that reading SQ fic was somehow disrespectful to JMo. Which I find utterly repulsive because it presumes to speak for JMo who is known to have read (and purchased) SQ fic herself. (Jen bought herself a copy of SQA Flight and recommended it to Lana).

I do see a dichotomy.... but not the one you see.

The Nature of Evil Chapter 13 review: The ending was on a lighter note, it was also shorter, with lot of people, lot of teasing, lot of prom-feels. :) It was a perfect ending after this little gem of fic about this crazy family that was more "normal", in the real sense than the "normal" (in this case Eric's) will ever be. And the end with the slipper was a perfect little touch. :) So this is the end, thank you for writing it this great! And thanks for the rude antis for inspiring you!!! :)

I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I have a real love for Outlaw Queen fandom and I wanted to write a love letter to the people who really make something beautiful out of a really dislikable storyline. To me this story was a love note to @lala-kate and @regalstarlight and @broadwaybaggins who wrote about peanut before me.
