"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"
EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD
from the moment she understood her ability she pushed it to its limits. She’d throw tantrums as hard as she could, jump out of tall trees, stab herself with pins from her hats and dresses just to see wounds close and bones heal in minutes. She pushed herself so hard she could heal in moments and not minutes or hours or days but she kept her discoveries mostly to herself because it was amethyst who was the golden child. Druzy had all the freedom in the world because she wasn’t the oldest and she took full advantage; she acted out for attention but it never seemed to be enough to get what she wanted from her family but it didn’t mean her antics slowed. No matter how hard druzy tried she couldn’t elicit real punishment or anger from her parents, not while amethyst was around to save the day and the family's reputation. The relationship between druzy and amethyst deteriorated quickly and never recovered as they resented what the other had.
the one thing that began to bond them was their shared anger over not being allowed to participate in crownstrial. For druzy it would have been everything, a chance to finally show her peers and the rest of hyperion what she was capable of, as she was convinced her ability surpassed that of amethyst’s and yet amethyst was still the star. It was a chance to prove herself, to prove she wasn’t crazy or reckless without cause but she wasn’t even allowed to try and fail. It shouldn’t be alright to disqualify an entire bloodline and that is what got her and amethyst talking after years of ignoring one another. But they still argued over what to do, how to amend the situation. It seemed there was no way for them to get along for long. But druzy was determined to get the rules changed, to allow her to participate but she hoped even if she was successful that amethyst wouldn’t also be chosen, that druzy would finally have the opportunity to be the shining star.
CONNECTIONS
ONYX — her sister’s betrothed and yet another thing she has that druzy covets. She began falling for onyx from the moment she saw him, his quiet demeanor so different from her own but she still found him so intriguing. She stole moments with him, talking to him while they waited for her sister to grace them with her presence. He was more open with druzy than he was with amethyst and no one even knew. She felt secure in the bond they were building and was surprised at her jealousy and lack of it when he announced his participation in crownstrial. They were two sides of the same coin, so why was his ability allowed to be used and seen and exalted and hers wasn’t? And what were her parents hoping to gain by marrying the two healer bloodlines? She needed to know but she also needed to participate, at his side or against it despite her feelings for him.
CITRINE —her one friend and a girl so similar to herself in so many ways and yet different as well. She truly appreciated citrine’s brutal honesty and her loyalty as well, as druzy pushed the boundaries of her ability and her friendship with citrine. But the girl stuck around despite druzy’s efforts and it was a tried and true friendship, perhaps one of the most brutal and honest in the palace, if you asked druzy herself. But she felt that same jealousy that citrine was allowed to participate, another passive gift, and another blow to her very fragile ego. She tried to keep her envy off her face and out of her voice but she’d never been good at that sort of thing. Citrine is trying to be understanding, she supports druzy’s bid to be allowed in but at some point their friendship will be tested like never before.
OPAL — for once she was around someone she didn’t particularly envy for any reason, opal was blind and often coddled by the people around her but druzy lacked the empathy to coddle the older girl. It was why opal liked her, she had spirit and reminded opal of her sister so much that she would sometimes call her by citrine’s name, despite her excellent hearing. Druzy often asked a million questions of opal but rarely about the future or anything to do with opal’s ability which endeared druzy to opal even more. She would pry about personal challenges but she meant nothing by it, just a burning curiosity and inability to bite her tongue. Opal would support her bid to be allowed to participate as well, she was the one person that perhaps understood how fearsome druzy would be in the arena if just given the chance, but she also felt druzy would not make a good ruler so her support was vocal but nothing more.
