Mod Edgeworth: Aside from what I’ve often heard from other AA fans: Gumshoe, Athena Cykes, Franziska Von Karma, Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix Wright, Trucy Wright, Lamiroir, Maya Fey, Pearl Fey, Ema Skye and the other gang of AA characters... I’d like to see my home girl, Kay Faraday, return back.

My least favorite character would be this dipshit.

I’d rather spend the night with Larry Butz, while listening to Wendy Oldbag on an Edgeworth Gossip Magazine, then driving in a limo for twelve hours with Dr. Hotti watching Jean Armstrong advertise his lotion products before being dragged around Gourd Lake by Lotta Hart and Spark Brussel than spend five seconds with Filch. Please, AA, never bring Filch in my presence EVER again.

Co-Mod: Y’all know who my favorite main character is by now, so I’ll skip that part (if you need a hint, her hair’s the same color as the juice she drinks).  My least favorite character is a different redhead.

She was once my least favorite video game character of all time, but then Doki Doki Literature Club happened.  Also, a couple of the Mods finally got me curious enough to watch a playthrough of Danganronpa, so she might be getting bumped down my “least favorite” ranking again very soon.

If we’re talking about side characters, I’d love to see Kay again, too, and an appearance from good old Detective Badd would definitely be nice.  Or everyone’s pal Gumshoe, for that matter.  Where the heck have they been?

Co-Mod: Will do, and thank you!  I’ve found it to be very comforting myself that, while different Mods have come and gone, this blog is still able to live on, and still enjoyable for so many people.  I wish I could guarantee that it will continue on in perpetuity after I leave, but whatever comes, I hope it’ll leave a lasting impression on everyone who pays it a visit.  In any case, I know the Ace Attorney fandom isn’t going anywhere soon, so let’s keep it goin’!

Mod Edgeworth: I wouldn’t say, but I haven’t been here long enough to know, so that may change. However, I have noticed people’s perspective of Manfred Von Karma changing. I’m beginning to see more and more fans coming out of the woodworks that agree about the hatred for Manfred Von Karma being overblown.

Co-Mod: I’ll start by saying that I didn’t see von Karma as much more than a heartless villain before Mod Edgeworth showed up.  I somehow forgot that he’s a human being who wasn’t always the selfish brute we seem him as in the games, so thanks for that, M.E.!

I’ve also been able to see a lot of the characters as being more human than I did when I first saw them in the games (not that they weren’t full of humanity there, too, of course).  Seeing Apollo gripe about his insane workload, Trucy having thoughts that contradict her words, and, more recently, Athena wondering what to call her estranged father has made them feel more like people going through people stuff than simple cartoon characters.  I hope that’s been the case for you, as well.  Besides being sources of entertainment, the members of the Ace Attorney cast are like friends to us (the good guys, at least).

I’m glad you’re still able to enjoy this blog, and that the new Mods’ answering styles are to your liking.  I’m also glad we can officially count both The Great Ace Attorney games as part of the translated series!  Thanks again, Capcom!

Speaking of translation, thank you again for being generous enough to translate our letters so they can be enjoyed by a wider audience.  That’s something I can’t imagine learning to do on my own, so much appreciated!

I don’t know about the other Mods, but I got fully vaccinated last month -- the Moderna vaccine, specifically.  All I can say is, it’d better be effective, because my body hated it.

Co-Mod: I’m glad (and impressed) that you were able to free yourself in such a creative way, but it’s all good.  I used to do the same sort of mockery with submitters’ letters before someone pointed out its potential rudeness, since some of them don’t speak English as their first language, so I've got no room to complain.  In fact, I’m a big stickler about getting my spelling and grammar correct, so please feel free to point out any errors you find.

For real, though, with Maya, Iris, Inga, Ga’ran and now Dhurke, it’s really convenient for spirit channeling disguises that so many people in this world have long black hair!

Actually, they’re both pretty accurate.

This letter means a lot to me, not just because I love knowing that my work and dedication have paid off in some way, but because I’ve been going through some serious struggles lately (more on that in a later post).  Being part of a blog that brings fun characters from an fun video game series to life has been awesome enough, and watching it grow into something bigger than it was has been even more awesome, but being able to provide some much-needed opportunities to laugh, smile, and escape from reality during a time of sorrow, fear, and uncertainty has been nothing short of a blessing for me.  Not to mention it’s helped me to enjoy life in new ways, so thanks for that, Capcom.

What I really appreciate, though, is you and so many others wishing me the best for the future.  It just so happens that the future has been one of my biggest fears for a long time, so hearing this kind of support, even from people I don’t know, is precisely what I need right now.  Allow me to offer my heartfelt thanks for it, and to wish each and everyone one of you the same.  The world needs people who can withstand any sort of circumstance right now, so don’t give any less than your best!

Co-Mod: It’s great to hear from you again!  Dang, it’s hard to believe your first letter was sent 2 years ago.  (As if turning 30 didn’t make me feel old already...)

I both appreciate and admire your dedication toward translating the letters we’ve answered here.  I hope you’re able to continue doing so in one way or another, but even if you aren’t, I’m still glad you’ve been so willing to share our character portrayals with a broader audience.  In fact, we might even have you to thank for part of our increased follower count, so thanks just in case!

I’m glad you enjoyed the essays, too.  I honestly hadn’t considered the possibility that I’d have to write some of those myself after the Mod left, but I’ve had some fun with them, and I hope they helped to make the characters they were about more enjoyable, or at least more interesting.  I’m still planning to finish the remaining requests after my departure, by the way.  Hopefully I’ll be able to post them a little more frequently than before.

I’m happy to report that I’ve been staying healthy and well (although I feel like I keep dodging bullets with people around me getting infected), and I hope the same can be said for you and for everyone else reading this.  I won’t lie, things have been tougher than usual for practically every human being lately, even aside from the pandemic.  Thankfully, we have someone who’s all too familiar with trials and tribulations to provide us with a helpful reminder:

Dear Starry,

Phoenix, more than likely, will forever be single. Be that because of his burn with the whole Iris/Dahlia thing or him just being too busy being a dad to everyone under his roof or something else entirely, he’s a single father through and through.

Phoenix’s capacity for love extends beyond romance to this intense care for everyone around him. He would throw himself in front of a car or steal a boat to pilot it to the middle of the ocean for one of his friends. The man is altruistic to a fault, even getting disbarred for a man he met the day before because he was his client. That’s nothing in the face of trying to run across a burning bridge to save Maya or becoming a lawyer at all to try and save Edgeworth. Maybe Phoenix won’t have a romantic interest ever, but that’s not to say he doesn’t have plenty of love. That could even be the reason. He’s not going to put anyone above anyone else when he has such strong bonds.

Obviously the most rumor stirring first kiss would be with Charley, as he is waaaaay out of Apollo’s league. The sender would not matter as it would likely end in Apollo himself being blamed and berated for making up such false claims in an attempt to ruin the pristine reputation of that fine slender palm lily. Coincidentally, this would also be the most chaotic.

Co-Mod: The most chaotic scenario involving a letter to Apollo that comes to my mind is one from Ms. Tiala.  It’d be the perfect way for her to get revenge on him for not living down to her standards, and might even start rumors between the more gullible members of the WAA (Athena and Trucy) that the two of them are in cahoots.

The most chaotic situation overall that I can think of is an ultimatum from Athena to Phoenix, stating that she refuses to do any more lawyer business unless Trucy finds another lovely assistant.  That one might even come to blows.

Co-Mod: I sure do!  Great to hear from you again!  And congratulations on translating over 1000 letters (and thank you)!

I’m also glad to hear that you’ve been able to glean so much good stuff from this blog, and that goes for everyone else that applies to.  I’ve said this before, but one of the greatest achievements for a comedian, whether on a blog or somewhere else, is helping people with negative feelings replace them with positive ones.  I’m no stranger to depression myself, so I know how great it feels to leave it behind.

And for those of you who think that I and the other new Mods aren’t as good as The Mod..........well, you’re probably right, but that’s hardly a fair comparison.  He’s been at this way longer than we have.

I’m glad your friend liked the response to their letter.  I always like when a letter gets deeply emotional or nostalgic, so I try to respond with the same level of emotion, whether it’s joyful, sad, bittersweet, or a different emotion.  That’s one of the things that makes these characters so relatable, after all.

And needless to say, I’m very glad that people from around the world have been able to find some connection in their love for Ace Attorney.  Thank goodness for both this series and the internet!  And thank you again for your contribution to it.

Co-Mod: I don’t remember anything in the games that answers those questions, but I can imagine Athena driving a used car whenever she needs to, as someone who enjoys travel more than the others (as mentioned in this letter).  I can also see Apollo driving something, but according to the Mod’s headcanon, he bikes everywhere, and I’m not one to question that.

This of course means everyone else has to carpool with Athena or Edgeworth in order to get anywhere by car.  You can probably guess which one they’d go with.

Co-Mod: I’ve been dealing with some mild illness (not coronavirus, thankfully), but I’m doing okay.  Thanks for asking!

The rule against roleplaying, as I’ve interpreted it, means that you can’t pretend a character in your letter is in the same physical location as the character you’re writing to, or have them physically interact with them (patting their shoulder, punching them, etc.).  As long your post can be interpreted as a written letter in some way, I won’t count it as roleplaying.  I admit it’s sort of a stretch with letters that include avatars, but I prefer to be liberal with those.  I can also be tempted to break the rule if a letter is clever enough, as in this recent one, or this one from a couple years ago.

I could be talked into using a tag for those letters, depending on what you had in mind -- was it something general like an “Avatar” tag, or the specific game, “Fate/Grand Order”?  The first one we could do, but I’d rather not to use the names of non-Ace Attorney games in the tags.  There’s no way we could keep up with them all.

I also greatly appreciate your compliments as well.  I still occasionally wonder if I’m still making the characters sound authentic and not just sound like me pretending to be them, so it’s great to hear that I and the other Mods haven’t lost our edge there.  Thank you sincerely for sharing our letters with Chinese speakers, and I’m happy your blog was able to gain some popularity from it as well!

As for shipping, I always try not to force any kind of ships in any of my letter responses, so if you have any examples of responses that seem like they’re doing so, please share them with me.  Much as I’d enjoy seeing any of the ships you mentioned become real, I don’t want to break canon just to make it happen.

Dear roundpi,

There are currently two of your letters in the queue, and they’re right next to each other -- one to Apollo, and one to Klavier.  We can delete either or both of those if you’d like us to.  It’s hard to say how many letters are from the same people, but we definitely have a few consistent writers -- some who send them at least every other day.  (I can’t blame them, of course, since I used to do the same thing.)

Also, I honestly didn’t realize how changing one word in this blog’s name would give it the same initials as the Wright Anything Agency.  It’s too late to actually change it at this point, but that’s still pretty fun to think about.

Glad you brought this up, because that’s one of the last things we want to convey about ourselves or this blog.  Sexuality is a topic I generally try to steer away from when answering letters, partly because it’s one that I only have a limited understanding of and I want to avoid saying something that can be easily misinterpreted (again), and partly because it’s a fiercely debated topic, and I don’t want to perpetuate that debate here.

And partly because it’s a discussion I’ve rarely come out of without some serious sparks flying...

With that in mind, unless a character’s sexuality, political views, religion, etc. has been explicitly defined in the game(s) they’re from, we can only make our best guesses about them.  In Athena’s case, judging by what we’ve seen of her in the games (her reaction to Hugh O’Conner’s claim that she likes him, her history of getting love letters meant for Junie, etc.), she seems like a guy kind of girl to me.  There’s every chance that I’m wrong, of course -- in fact, she may not even know herself -- but I imagine that’s at least how she views herself.

...Woah, that got Persona-esque all of a sudden.

In any case, if anything we post here comes off as homophobic, you have my word that it isn’t meant to be.  We also don’t want to emphasize one headcanon over another (whether it’s mine, yours, the Modthorne’s, or the Mod’s), but sometimes we just have to pick one and stay consistent with it.  If it disagrees with yours, then it’ll just have to disagree, but that’s our reasoning behind it.

My physical response to this letter was way more emotional than that, by the way.  It looked something like this:

I didn’t realize who you were, actually.  Good on you for joining Tumblr!

I do my best to keep an open mind with how Capcom develops its characters, but if I were in charge of how Athena’s life and career continued on from Spirit of Justice, it’d probably be something along these lines:

We’d see her a few months after the events in Khura’in, looking as cheery and confident as ever, but slightly older and more mature-looking.  As we heard her voice narrating, she’d shove the doors of the courthouse open with a look of pure confidence, wave to the policemen as she climbed the stairs (being extra careful to watch her step), and wait for her moment to enter the courtroom.  She’d then walk up to the defense’s bench with a smile, slam her fist into her hand, and announce proudly, “The defense is ready to go, Your Honor!!”

Then Widget would ruin the mood by blurting out, “I’m so sleepy!”

During the trial, she’d learn that her defendant is from somewhere in Europe (whatever country you prefer), that he/she is a friend of her family there, and that some unusual things have been going on with them.  This would lead her to request a leave of absence so she can visit them, perhaps taking Phoenix or Simon along as a chaperone.  From there, she’d find herself in a series of new situations, including (but not limited to) having to defend a member of her family from murder charges, having Widget stolen from her and being forced to do a therapy session without him, discovering a hidden crime ring (that a member of her family might be involved in), and so on.  In the end, she’d come out of it with more knowledge about herself, being a lawyer, and holding on to her faith in others until the bitter end.

It could be that I’m just anxious to see what sort of people she’s related to and if they’re as wild and energetic as she is, but I’d also love to see how Athena handles herself in a new environment, especially one as culturally (and visually) diverse as Europe.  That’s just my idea of a good Athena-centered game, though -- I’m sure there are plenty of others out there that would be just as exciting to see.  I mean, it is the Cykester we’re talking about here.

Here are a couple of letters that I found particularly heartfelt, plus another that was heartfelt and silly at the same time.  There are plenty more that were written before I got here, of course, such as this one and this one.  I love how this blog gives us a chance to see how some touching non-canon character conversations might take place.

You’re correct.  They’re called Happy-Happyists, which is probably the most ironic name possible for a cult that wanted to “paint the town blue.”  Or maybe that was on purpose.  Who knows?

The tag was actually referring to the cult of Athena, which apparently existed in different parts of ancient Greece.  I was completely unaware of the Aum Shinrikyo cult and the parallels that could be drawn between them and the one in Earthbound.  Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction, isn’t it?
