sorry to bother, but I have a little enquiry so yield to your expertise! -- what art-history books/authors do you recommend to read for the Siglo de Oro in Spain?
No bother at all—I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you! Many of what I suspect are the best sources on the Spanish Golden Age are in Spanish—which I can’t read, unfortunately—so I have limited suggestions for you. Jonathan Brown is, as far as I know, one of the big names of the field: he wrote The Golden Age of Painting in Spain.
Joan Sureda is more modern; his Golden Age of Spain is about two decades newer than Brown’s book.
If you’re okay with something fairly technical, Zahira Veliz’s translations of some artists’ treatises make for a nice primary source (it’s called Artists’ Techniques in Golden Age Spain: Six Treatises in Translation).
I’m publishing this in case someone else has a better idea of who or what to read—any suggestions, dear readers?
