Yuletide Reveals

I meant to do this two days ago when fics were actually revealed, but got distracted by family visits and such.

As I mentioned in this post, my gift fic, Agnus Dei, was amazing and if you’re familiar with C.J. Sansom’s Matthew Shardlake series (and have read the most recent book because spoilers), I highly recommend reading it.

The two fics I wrote are below. Both are in fandoms I’ve never written in before (one because it didn’t exist; the other because I only just rediscovered it this summer). I put both under a cut because the descriptions are slightly spoilery.

You only get one shot at a first impression (Scandal, Olivia Pope, T) - Four meetings Olivia Pope had, and one she did not.

I rediscovered Scandal over the summer and amidst my obsessive drooling over Olivia's wardrobe was a deep-seated curiosity about her history, particularly her relationship with her father. I won't go into too much because spoilers, but Joe Morton gives a delightfully scenery-chewing performance and even when the plot reasons for his various appearances were eye-rollingly far-fetched, I didn't care because he was just so much fun, and his interactions with Kerry Washington as Olivia were fascinating to watch. Plus, I wanted to know more about her histories with the various other members of Olivia Pope & Associates and with Cyrus Beene. We got a lot of her with Fitz, and that's fine, but I'm less interested in him than the show seems to be.

Like dead walls and vaulted graves (Crimson Peak, T) - Edith Cushing begins her life as a widow and a writer.

I had originally wanted to write something a bit like this fic (which is great, read it!), but then I saw Liviana's Edith-centric prompt and I just couldn't resist. So I ended up with something that was about half snippets from Edith's novel (seen in the end credits) and half her journey from trauma to (sort-of) acceptance after the end of the film. I knew I wanted her to stay a widow rather than remarry, and I really wanted her to do something about the legacy of the other victims who came before her, since that was arguably part of why their ghosts were trying to communicate with her in the first place--not just to help her, but to get justice for themselves.
