Last night I was watching some Bill Dance videos on the Bill Dance app on my iPhone. He was talking about tips on how to fish differently and showing new lures he likes to use. The one that surprised me the most was Yumbrella. The Yumbrella is just another name for the Alabama rig but made by YUM products. This lure is somewhat new on the market and has caused a lot of discussion lately. To get started here is a pic of one (Foxy Lady color):
The lure consists of 1 leader with (up to) 5 wires coming off the back with swivel clasps on the back for jigs. Most people will use standard jig heads or football jig heads varying on sizes with a swimbait or worm attached to the jig. Here is what it looks like with the swimbaits on it:
The idea is to replicate a school of fish that have broken away from a larger school. Bass tend to key on these types of bait fish as an easy meal. Reading fishing forums on the net about the Alabama-rig has mixed reviews, to say the least...
It's about a 50/50 split on peoples opinions on this bait. Some people think this is the best new lure since the inception of the plastic worm. Others think of it as a "cheater" bait.
Some pros for the lure are:
Attracts bass feeding on schools.
New lure that bass aren't used to yet.
Chances to land multiple fish at one time.
Good for cloudy dark water.
Some cons for the lure are:
Very heavy lure. Can cause strain after multiple casts.
Can foul-hook a single fish with the extra hooks.
Wires may "spook" finicky fish.
Not good for clear water.
EXPENSIVE! Close to $15.00 for 1 rig not counting the swimbaits.
I really don't know if I want to try one of these out or not. There are other rigs out there that have 2-5 wires coming off of the bait, less may help out more!? What are your experiences with this lure? Who knows, if I see one cheap at the Indy Boat, Sport and Travel show I may have to give it a try.
