In March 1948 (a matter of weeks before Israel declared independence), Teddy Kollek (later to become Mayor of Jerusalem) and his fellow Haganah operatives sat in a New York hotel room and pondered their next move. An Irish ship loaded with arms intended for Jewish fighters waited at the docks, but would not set sail until the captain had been paid a substantial amount of money. The problem was that every Haganah operative was being closely watched by US Federal Agents. Situated in the same building was the famous Copacabana nightclub, frequented by none other than Frank Sinatra. Kollek hatched a plan "I went downstairs to the bar and Sinatra came over. I don't know what came over me, but I told him what I was doing in the United States and what my dilemma was." In the early hours of the following morning, Kollek left the front entrance of the hotel clutching a bag, closely followed by FBI agents. At the same time, Frank Sinatra slipped out of a rear exit, with a million dollars in a large paper bag. Making his way down to the docks, he handed the cash to the captain and the ship set sail.
