The up-and-coming, Neukölln-based rapper/producer (and my flatmate) Yung Logos rounds off the Summer with this somber, cloud-ballad to loneliness. 1. BSMG - “Jesse Owens”
Ja Mann, wir haben gewonnen wie Jesse / Sag ihnen, wir waren nicht willkommen wie Jesse...
An afrobeatz-infused celebration of black struggle and triumph, Berlin rapper Megaloh and his supergroup BSMG relate to Jesse Owens and his momentous four-medal win before Hitler in 1936, while identifying with the African refugees struggling across Berlin today: “Let them know, we weren’t welcome, like Jesse.”
2. Yung Hurn - “Okay Cool”
Alle deine Freunde hassen alle meine Freunde aber alle meine Freunde kennen deine Freunde nicht...
Assuming he was just another wannabe sadboy, I was initially skeptical. But Hurn has more swag than a sadboy, along with a superior aesthetic.
3. Hasan K & Gringo - “Hot Pursuit (feat. Veysel)”
Früher hat mein Handy wegen Drogen-Kunden vibriert / Heute klingelt es wenn es den Azan rezitiert...
These were my local rappers when I lived in Berlin, so I have to support. But “Hot Pursuit,” features one of the hardest beats I’ve heard all year (in any country) and marks a serious progression for the Neukölln duo.
4. Rin - “Blackout”
Hose: 5-0-1 Levis, GPC 8 und 4, du weißt (Grob!) / Mein Dresscode: Trenchcoat...
Rin started out on Yung Hurn’s Live From Earth label, but went solo last year and seems to have sped past Hurn in popularity ever since. Another phenomenal beat, this time more in the direction of a Playboi Carti banger.
5. Yung Logos - “Auf Die Ohrn”
Wenn ihr den scheiß fühlt, dann bewegt euch zum Beat / Wenn ihr den scheiß fühlt, denn bewegt euch...
Another biased pick, but my old roommate Yung Logos is making moves. A talented rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Logos has spent much of 2017 testing the waters, but next year is his time to shine.
