I walk up to the counter and approach the school librarian. She is a young-looking (and might I add, a VERY beautiful) woman with glasses and freckles. "Oh, hey! Could I ask you what your suggestion of sci-fi novels are?"
(( Oh, you flatter her! ))
"Hello there!" she said invitingly. "Sci-Fi, is it? Hmm…"
She pondered and pondered and pondered some more. It was only a few seconds, but it sure felt like more. As more books and books had come to her mind, a solution to their question young Yuuko did find.
"I’ve got it! Here are a few you might enjoy."
'The Giver' by Lois Lowry. It's being turned into a movie soon, but adaptations tend to gloss over the finer details. You can read the whole thing here first! I'd tell you the story, but that would be a big spoiler. You simply must experience it for yourself!”
'Franz Kafka: The Complete Stories' by a man who needs no introduction. The classics are always a great place to start!
It’s not a book in the classic sense, but ‘Ghost in the Shell’ by Shirow Masamune is an interesting read. His views on ‘Cyberization’ and the future of robotics is an interesting one. If you’re into Political Intrigue or just plain Action, this should be right up your alley. Sadly the adorable Tachikoma from the anime aren’t there in the same capacity in the manga. But don’t let that stop you from trying it!
This one’s not a sci-fi novel per se, but ‘Visions of the Multiverse’ by Dr. Steven Manly (no really) is a must for fans of Science and Sci-Fi in general. In it he discusses the theory of a Multiverse in a way that even the layman can understand. It makes you feel smart, plus it’s fun to imagine all the possibilities across an infinite number of Earths!
Like for example, there might be a universe where I didn’t recommend all these great books to you!” Yuuko finished with a laugh. “Would you like me to check these out for you?”
