About Today…
“Hello there, everybody! I just wanted to say something about today, if that’s okay.
It’s Valentine’s Day, and that means a lot of things - lovers celebrating their love and giving each others gifts is the first thing that comes to mind. The problem is, for many people that’s ALL the day represents…that and the sadness of being alone.
While I’m not saying that it’s not sad being on your own at times, I don’t think this day should be seen as a reminder of that. First and foremost, I think this should be a day of love, and not just the typical kind. There are actually many kinds of love, and just as many kinds of people to love:
People you laugh with,
people you cry with,
people you can just spend all day with not doing anything in particular,
and even those you connect with virtually.
I know it doesn’t seem to compare to the ever-powerful ‘special someone just for me’, but can you honestly say you don’t love these people that have impacted your life? Family, friends, companions…whatever you call them, the bond you share is a type of love all its own. This holiday should be just as much about them as anyone else. So, if nothing else, please thank them for being there in some way!
Still, if you really want to find that person just for you, then please do so! Just don’t feel like you have to find them to be happy or whole. My mother once said this: find someone who compliments you, not completes you. Find a person who can bring out the best in you, or at least make you see the world in another, positive way. You need to be happy as just yourself before you can try to become happy with someone else.
Show yourself some appreciation! You weren’t born as some pre-determined set that only functions with ‘the other half’. As hard as it can be, a bit of confidence in yourself can go a long way. When the time comes, you’ll be a stronger person for it, I promise.
I know all this talk of love can bring up bad memories - years without a Valentine, or years without a lover. Believe me, I know. Aside from mandatory “give a card to everyone in the whole class so no one feels left out” exchanges, I was never given one. While I have been in one relationship in my life, we weren’t together long enough to see a Valentine’s Day as a couple. They’re not the happiest memories, but I sure don’t let them dictate what this day is to me, or my life for that matter. I have people I care about, who care about me, here and now, and that’s more than enough for me to keep moving forward in life. I’d like to think I can believe in my own strength too, when need be.
In short, I’m simply saying:
Let today be about those close to you
Look for that special someone, but don’t feel like you need them to be happy
Don’t let the negative memories impact how you see your life and yourself
Just like a certain someone I know, I’d hug the world if I could, but I simply can’t. Please be happy today, and tomorrow too! Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! If that’s okay.
P.S. - You’re amazing, and I love you. Yes, you! If that’s alright.”
