I’m gutted over Dolores O’Riordan.
My band has been covering Zombie since we started playing -- not exactly by any rational decision, but because I came in with extremely limited guitar skills. I knew the bassline and solo from Zombie, however, and used them for warming up at the studio one night. We were in a tight spot regarding the length of our first full set, and Kurt said, “Fuck it, let’s play that. We both know the words, and you know the guitar part already.” Sure, most of the guitar part. The easy part of it. But hey, an opportunity to play a breakcore cover of Zombie, and eventually record it for our debut EP? IN.
We pulled it off, and it slays live. It still does. Because it’s an amazing song written by an amazing songwriter. And now we’ve lost her.
The song is free on our Bandcamp. Still not 100% pleased with my vocals on the recording, but we were under the gun for time. Yes, I purposely didn’t try to ape O’Riordan’s Limerick lilt, because I’m not from freaking Ireland. We already appropriated some of the lyrics to reflect the violence in the US, so I wasn’t gonna appropriate her personal style on top of that.
We’re gonna have to do something special at our next gig. Got until Feb 10 to pull it off. Stay tuned. http://www.ohmresistance.net
