The fluttering of Nick’s heart is overwhelming. For a moment, pressed against him, it’s all that he can hear — like wingbeats of a panicked bird trapped within the cage of his chest, the tang of fear rising on damp skin. Vasile hates to be the one to do that; if he’d had time to be more gentle, he would have, but it isn’t his top priority right now. Because there’s a group of people outside the abandoned store they’ve been searching, and in a few moments? They’re coming in.

Before he can think better of it, he’s reached back. Ensnared Nick with fingers around one wrist, guiding him through the carnage of fallen shelves and skeletal remains. There’s a back door somewhere — leads to the loading dock he’d spotted before coming inside — and it doesn’t sound like anyone’s there yet ( or else they’re being impossibly quiet ). If they can sneak out, unnoticed, and wait until everyone else came in — well. It’s a lot easier than Plan B, at least. Although Plan B does benefit from being simple: he just kills everyone in sight.

“ just got in this mornin’. ” the boy responds, hooking his thumbs into backpack straps. sight of groceries notches a hunger pang. (his last meal – leftovers plucked from trash bin – was two days ago.)

“ i could carry some of that. ” a neighborly proposal. his chin juts to the pyramid of food in the man’s arms. scar-pocked hands reach out.

Bella doesn't make a big fuss about it. There's a soft happy birthday and extra kisses in the morning - and for a while that might be all Nick thinks there is. But by the afternoon, he'll notice an unmarked envelope in the spot where his keys normally go (so she can be sure he won't miss it). Inside are a pair of tickets for the next Rangers game - close, only a couple of rows back. Importantly - its a night game, so if he wanted, Bella could go too.

    He looks pretty bad--worse than he usually does, at least. Akachan’s always looked older than thirty. It’s a combination of his hard childhood, his work, the drug use, the amount of sticky hair gel he laboriously applies every day.

     Also, getting shot--twice--doesn’t help. But he still tried to look put together, in one of his gaudy, iridescent wine colored suits, leaning in the doorway. Pretty well-dressed for eight in the morning. He has a package in his fingerless hand, and he didn’t tell Nick he was dripping by.

     “Hey,” he says, in English. “I need to talk to you. Before we do, though, you gotta promise me you’ll put aside your stupid martyr bullshit and set aside your ego. Okay? Can I come in?”

   isaac is stretched out comfortably on the couch. well, as comfortable as he can with the way his heels hang off the far arm rest, but it’s nice enough, & the warm comfort of nick’s lap underneath his head & the gentle fingers carding through his hair are well worth it. he had started out watching tv, but the longer nick played with his hair, the more he relaxed. & eventually he dozes off, wondering what kind of magic nick has in his fingertips.
