the death threats vanished bc the person probably saw nick and mike fighting and realized barba had bigger things to deal with

              part of her hates him for this ------ his ability to say such things, half whispered from nearly the other side of the room, raising the hairs on the back of her neck ; his apparent willingness to be broken at their hands. her first thought is simply YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SAYING. because he doesn’t, not really. he’s seen her willingly have a stranger beheaded, yes .  .  . what he does not know is how she singlehandedly destroyed adam galloway’s career --- how she vowed to bury him if he did not stand down. how she drove megan hennessy back to the comfort of popped pills, how she tore patricia walker in pieces and had the gall to pity her in the aftermath. how she allowed russo and zoe barnes to be murdered, AND FOR WHAT ? to stay the hand which now seemed to be falling regardless, trajectory aimed precisely for the legacy they had fought so long to build, threatening every inch of ground they had managed to cover in the span of thirty years. everything they have built stands on the precipice of ruination and still, she cannot bring herself to regret a single action. everything she has done has been in the service of this goal, she is close enough to the summit to taste it in every breath, and yes, she loves him. but that does not make him safe. it is the very darkest of the truths she has mulled over & come to accept in the weeks that have passed.  would i break him if i had to ? would i do what i have always done ?   

               she turns, thoughts not permitted passage on her features --- instead she serves him a smile far gentler than those he’s been awarded since the article surfaced. and then, she lies through her teeth.   ❛ don’t be silly, tom. you’ll never have to worry about that. ❜
