Tuesday, May 2: Circle II Circle, “Out of Reach”

With co-writes from Jon Oliva and Chris Caffery, and production by Oliva, Watching in Silence found Zachary Stevens making a Savatage album in all but name.  And in that respect, Stevens’ first album with Circle II Circle ably carried on the Savatage legacy, and if it skewed more hard rock than metal, the same could be said about a few Savatage records.  However, “Out of Reach” was an out-an-out Savatage-style metal track: written by Stevens and Oliva, the song opened Watching in Silence with melodic flair, heavy riffing, and Stevens’ emotive vocals.  Stevens was a pleasant surprise here, as he didn’t veer into the melodrama that marked much of his work with Savatage, and the tune managed to cover a fair amount of ground in four minutes, combining Oliva’s penchant for bombast with a welcome economy.  “Out of Reach” properly laid the foundation for what would become Stevens’ longest running act.
