England had 7 overs to play on day 4. Cummins gave Australia to a grand start by dismissing Burns and root of successive deliveries. The one to castle Root was an absolute Jaffa. This is Root’s 3rd duck in this series, highest for England captain in 5 test series in test history. England ended day at 18-2. England need to bat out 90 overs on final day to secure a draw. This could be as miraculous as Stokes century in last test has been. In England line up, baring Root, they don’t have a batsmen who can hold ends up like Pujara, Smith or Labushagne.

Bangladesh were dismissed for 205 giving  Afghanistan a lead of 137. Bangladesh had brief smile in their faces when Shakib grabbed 2 in 2 to reduce Afghanistan to 4-2 in opening over. But that was for short while. Fifties by took Afghanistan to Inrahim Zadran and Asghar took them to 260. Bangladesh needed 398 to win. Liton and Shadman Islam started carefully for Bangladesh. Once Zahir dismissed Liton for 10, doors opened up. From 30-1, they were reduced to 82-4. Rashid and Zahir grabbed to 2 wickets each including al critical wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim.  Shakib and Shadman took Bangladesh past 100.

In US open ladies finals, Canada’s rookie 19 year old Bianca Andreescu took on 23 slam champion Serena Williams. Andreescu was born 9 months after Serena won her opening slam in 1999 US open. Serena has won 23 slams. Andreescu lost in opening round qualifiers in 2018 US open and was ranked outside 200. She made great strides this year to be in top 20. She had to rise her game against Serena though to make a match of it. In opening set it was Canadian youngster . She hit winners from great angle and made less errors. Her serve was working like a dream. She had 84% first serve in. That continued in 2nd set too when she took a all commanding 5-1 lead. She was serving for the match. Quite a few players had choked at this point of time. Serena pounced on Andreescu as she knew Canadian was choking a bit under pressure. Before once could realize, Serena levelled the match at 5-5. US open crowd was all behind Serena. They were even cheering for double faults served by Andreescu. Memories of 1999 French open came along where Hingis lead by set and 5-2 against Steffi before Swiss star choked. Steffi came back to win her last and 22nd slam in 3 sets. Andreescu had to win in straight sets as Serena was almost unbeatable in 3 setter. She recomposed herself to hold the serve finally.  In 12th game, Andreescu finally found her range which  got to win her first set. She finally held her nerve to break Serena again and deservedly win her maiden slam. She became first teenage slam champion since 2006 when Maria Sharapova in US open. A new star has arrived. She along with Osaka could and probably will win many more slams.  As far as Serena is concerned,  she has now lost 4 slam finals since winning her 23rd slam.  She has lost to Kerber, Osaka, Halep and now against Andreescu. All were straight sets losses. Her desire to win 24th slam is turning out to be like Sachin’s 100th international century. It’s a good sign though that ladies has a host of new young champions unlike in mens where Federer-Nadal-Djokovic is ruling the game. Can Medvedev turn the tide??
