Bone Tomahawk (S Craig Zahler 2015)

Gripping cannibal hillbilly western with Kurt Russell as a grizzled but mild-mannered lawman in a The Hills Have Eyes style standoff against a murderous clan of troglodytes. This Sawney Bean scenario has been repeatedly mined by the genre with mixed results. What makes Bone Tomahawk interesting is, without the horror and (very) graphic violence, the film would stand tall as a standard western. Substitute desperate outlaws for cannibals, and you have the makings of an old-fashioned horse opera.

There are some wonderful post-modern touches though - the night before he leads a posse into the badlands, we see the sheriff in his kitchen calmly making sandwiches for the journey. Keep an eye out for Sid Haig as an educated bushwhacker.
