BREAKING CHARACTER REAL QUICK FOR A SLEEP SUPPLEMENT PSA FOR MY FELLOW VAMPIRES AND NIGHT OWLS:
so I've had chronic insomnia since early childhood and the only thing that helps me fall asleep without the "oh, I've been drugged" feeling is melatonin
and never once have I seen any instructions on the bottle anything beyond "take at or before bedtime"
EXCEPT
my doctor tells me last week that you're not supposed to do this otherwise it really fucks with your circadian rhythms! apparently the optimal time to take melatonin is around sunset (if you want to be asleep by 10pm-12am) because darkness is what naturally stimulates the brain to secrete melatonin
taking it too late (i.e., past 9pm if you intend to sleep around 11pm and wake up at 7am) can majorly screw up your circadian rhythm and keep you feeling groggy and sleepy af well into the day!!! which explains a lot for me personally — not the whole picture but certainly some of it!
so what I've been doing is I take my regular dose as soon as I notice it's dark outside (around 7:45pm these days) and I start getting sleepy around 10pm-11pm depending on the day I've had. I'm fucking full on passing out by midnight, like phone falling on my face, gotta sleep now. and my sleep isn't perfect but it's a lot better than it was! I get a solid unbroken 6-7 hours stretch which is huge for me and I don't feel like death warmed over needing both vyvanse and caffeine to even think about functioning!
anyway if you already knew this then GOOD FOR YOU BUDDY WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME AT ANY POINT IN THE PAST 15 YEARS and if not, I hope you try it out and it helps even a bit! 🖤

In an interesting turn of botanical events, University of Houston engineers report that while melatonin keeps us asleep, it wakes up plants, helping them grow. Melatonin, a hormone produced in the brain and reproduced synthetically in labs, is America's sleep drug of choice, taken by roughly 27% of U.S. adults. It helps control the body's circadian rhythm or internal clock, signaling you that it's time to go to bed. "Melatonin has emerged as a pivotal molecule in agriculture due to its ability to promote plant growth and alleviate abiotic stresses," says Adbul Latif Khan, assistant professor of engineering technology. The study is published in the journal iScience. Imad Aijaz, a graduate student of Khan's, is the paper's first author.

Apologies if this isn't useful at all, but I always make a point to mention this when people are talking about trying to avoid nightmares, because it helps me so, so much - I use a supplement, Mucuna Pruriens extract powder, and make it into a hot drink every night. It's a natural source of L-dopa, which is a precursor to dopamine. I get absolutely traumatizing CPTSD nightmares, and this somehow reduces the frequency, but even more important for me tbh, when I do get nightmares they are 90% less bad and intense. It's like it affects the 'mood' of dreams to make them more positive. When I don't have it, the nightmares genuinely ruin the entire next day for me, they stick in my mind so badly, but if I'm having my Mucuna Pruriens I can just wake up, let them go, and forget them pretty quick.
It's obviously an unregulated supplement so ymmv. It makes some people feel a bit sick. Just thought it could be something to look into maybe! Nightmares suck a lot, I'm sorry you gotta deal with that.
I'm curious to see how to compares to the stuff melatonin did to me. That stuff sent me to the fish dimension.
We're trying something new today. Petey has a new hoodie or snood or whatever you call this thing. It's more comfortable for her to wear than her noise canceling headphones so I figure she can wear this, until things get really loud. I think she looks adorable. She seems to like it, and it's calmed her down a lot. I'm deploying so many things to get her through today... the snood, her thundercoat, CBD, melatonin, loud TV, and air conditioning, positive reinforcement, togetherness... all combined with a lot of love and support. Together, we got this. We take care of each other, and today, is my turn to take care of her. It's my honor and pleasure to do so!!! She refuses to go outside, anymore, because every time she does, something explodes and scares her. So I have pee pads all over the place, and I'm staying by her side, all day. I can't wait until it's 2am, and she can go outside, safely, and relieve herself. Until then, we're staying all cuddled up, next to each other, in bed, watching a very, very loud TV, with the air conditioning on to drown out the noise. We got this... together, we are stronger, and together, we can do amazing things and help each other. That applies to Petey and me and people, in general.
She reminds me of the older women, in NYC,in their babushkas, but I digress... it's what I do 😁🤣🤣🤣 I think she's beautiful in her babushka!! That's what I'm going i can this thing!! I love that term!! 😁♥️🐕♥️
trying to pull a prank on my girlfriend by putting my son melatonin in the hallway next to our bedroom waiting for her to wake up, except it's backfiring because i keep seeing something vaguely human shaped in the corner of my eye and looking over so quick i can hear my neck snap
Been a minute but I hated how I drew melaniw in my other post so I drew her more sketches.. + dreamer. my artstyle is always changing Im crine..
Anyways does anyone else like drawing melaniw in different cutesy outfits? I do!
