Camping Trip: Zane/Riley Story~
“It’s now or never.”
Zane sat on his front porch surrounded by sleeping bags and suitcases. The street light was the only constant light source he could use for stacking them in an orderly fashion (along with the random car headlights that drove by) so they basically ended up piled in a disorganized jumble, but Zane knew once Riley arrived, he would help him get it all in the car. He packed the basics: clothes and pajamas, two sleeping bags for him and Riley (“Always the prepared one,” he had joked to Riley on the phone when he asked to borrow one), hygenic stuff, and of course, all of the ridiculous ”campy” things his mother had forced him to take along. She packed him a bag full of bug spray, sunscreen, ponchos, and anything else that could possibly be needed at any given point this weekend. When Zane saw Riley’s car pulling in front of his house, a grin spread across his face. The passenger side window rolled down and Riley called out from inside, “Need a hand?” Zane nodded and picked up a large bag, waiting for his boyfriend to come out and do the same. They loaded the car efficiently and hopped in the car, excited as ever for their first real getaway and their last real get-together with their amazing friends from Degrassi.
Riley opened the car door and stepped out walking towards Zane giving a him kiss on the cheek and a tight hug. “Think you got enough there?” He joked as he pulled back from the hug. “Well you know my mom ‘better safe than sorry’”. He said with a soft smile as he picked one of the bags up from the floor. Riley smiled to himself thinking about how cute he thought it was that Zane was always prepared for everything and anything that life might throw at them. He took his hand off Zane shoulder and walked to the other bags picking multiple at a time trying to hurry up so they can get there as soon as possible. As the last things were put into the truck of the car Riley went up to join Zane in the front of the car who was waiting for him. He sat in and looked over at his boyfriend giving him another smile reassuring each other that the weekend was going to be lots of fun. Riley put the car into drive and headed on their way. “You can pick the station by the way, anything is good with me as long as it keeps me awake.” He teased as he gave Zane a slight nudge.
Zane turned on the radio and searched for a station. He finally settled on a classic rock station and turned it up loudly, making Riley jump in his seat. “Awake yet?” Zane said with a giggle. He turned the radio back down to a normal volume. “Do you have directions?” he asked hopefully. Riley nodded in reply. “They’re in the glove compartment. Feel around for them when we reach the highway, I can get that far from here without them.” Zane shot him a thumbs-up. “Alrighty. Now, let’s get a-trippin’!” Riley let out a scoff. “You’re so weird.” With a childish grin, Zane replied, “That’s why you love me!” After a bit of driving, the Scorpions’ classic, “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” came on the radio. Both sat up in their seats with excitement and exclaimed, “I love this song!” simultaneously. With Zane on lead vocals and air guitar and Riley drumming along on his steering wheel, the two rocked out like superstars. The song came to an end and the couple cracked up in their seats. Suddenly, Riley had a realization. “Wait…check the directions for me?” Zane searched around with his hands for the paper with directions on it in the glove compartment at his knees. He finally found them, decorated with a ring left by Riley’s coffee mug from earlier in the day. “Got ‘em,” he said, dropping the paper back on the car floor and picking it back up suavely. “Alright,” Riley chuckled, “Now, what exit were we supposed to get off on?” Zane pulled his cell phone out of his pocket for a light source and checked the paper. “14.” They both looked up at the next exit sign on the highway. “Exit 16! Crap! We missed it!” Riley exclaimed. He slammed his hand on the steering wheel in anger. “Calm down,” Zane responded. “We can just turn around. It’s no big deal. Take the next exit and then we can get back on the highway on the other side.” Riley did what he was told, getting off at Exit 16. “Now,” Zane continued, “All you have to do is turn around and get back on the highway. Think you can manage that?” Riley nodded back silently, still a bit shaken from his short fit of frustration. What could possibly go wrong?
Once they finally made it back onto the highway and getting off at the right exit Riley was able to settle his nerves and continued driving as the music calmed him down. “Okay then what exit do we get off at after this one?” He asked making sure not to miss it like he did the one before. “Um, the next one is exit 31. So we have plenty of time okay? Relax.” Zane added as he rubbed Riley’s thigh to reassure him that everything was going to be okay. Riley smiled as his heart rate went down. Zane turned to the side of the window and looked out the window watching all the cars speeding down the highway. Minutes went by as more miles were put on the car. “Zane, hey Zane.” He said in a low voice scared to wake him up incase he fell a sleep. Zane turned around and looked at him with a confused look. “Why are you whispering?” He asked him as if Riley was crazy. “Oh I just thought you might have fallen asleep or something. Can you do me a favor?” He asked him with a sympathetic look on his face. “Well that depends, what is this favor you need?” He said with a smirk and he turned his body to face Riley again. “Well, I forgot to eat dinner and there is a granola bar in the glove compartment can you grab it for me?” Zane chuckled as he leaned over to open the compartment. “I should have known, Mr. Stavros is always hungry.”
Zane pulled the bar out of the glove compartment, unwrapped it, and held it up to Riley, whose eyes were focused intently on the road ahead. Instead of grabbing it out of the air with his hand, Riley decided against taking his hands off the wheel. He instead took the bar from Zane with his mouth. He sunk his teeth into it gluttonously while Zane looked on, laughing. He looked down at the clock on his cell phone. “Hey, man. It’s pretty late. Do you think they’ve gone to bed yet, or anything?” Riley scoffed. “Degrassi kids? In bed this early? Yeah, right. Shoot Anya a text to find out what everyone’s up to.” Zane nodded and began typing to their best girl friend. Hey, we’re still on our way. What are we missing down there? Zane and Riley watched the road as they waited for a reply from Anya. “I hope we’re not missing any awesome stuff,” Riley commented, and Zane agreed. “Man, I just can’t believe it.” Riley made eye contact with Zane. “Believe what? That we’re late? I can. We’re always late to everything.” Zane laughed and shook his head no. “That high school’s almost…over. That we’re leaving Degrassi soon. Leaving all our friends, going off to college and leaving our families, and…each other.” Riley sighed loudly, remembering his acceptance to Eastern on a football scholarship. “Can we do this sappy, emotional thing later? I don’t think I can pay attention to the road and deal with it.” He flashed a sad smile at his boyfriend and continued the car trip, intent on making this trip as memorable as he can for the both of them.
“Sure.” Zane said with a slight smirk. “So how far do you think we are?” He asked as he fed Riley the last pieces of the granola bar. As soon as he finished chewing the mouth full he answered him. “Well, I think in about a half hour to forty-five minutes. So I don’t think it will take much longer if everything staying on track like it is now.” “Okay sounds good to me. I don’t think we missed to much so I think we will be alright.” Zane added. Eyes still glued on the road. Riley took the last exit getting onto a bumpy dirt road about 20 minutes away from the campsite. The road became very dark due to the lack of lights to help guide them though the path. Riley was struggling to see out the windshield. Zane looked over at Riley and chuckled a little “I think you should put on the high beams.” Zane suggested. “I think you are right. I don’t know why it didn’t cross my mind to be honest.” He responded as he lightly tapped his head. “Well maybe you’re tired.” Zane said with a soft smile. “But we will be there soon and then you can rest all you want.” He continued. As Riley turned the high beams on it was too late Riley had driving over a sharp tree branch that had fallen causing the front tire to pop. The car jolted as they both we sent forward by the sudden blow. “SHIT!” Riley shouted as he hit the steering wheal with all his force. “FUCK! Of course this would happen.” He said opening the door letting it whip back making it almost hit him as he stepped out.
Riley continued to curse loudly and walked to the popped tire, observing the damage. Zane got out and put an arm on his shoulder, trying to assure him that it would be okay, but Riley moved away from the comforting touch. “What are we supposed to do now?” he whined, stomping on the ground like a child. “Chill out a sec. I’ll grab the flashlight my mom packed me so we can check this out.” Zane hopped in and out of the car in a flash and returned to Riley, flashlight in hand. As he was handing off the flashlight, Zane’s phone went off. “That better be Anya,” he whispered as he reached into his pocket to check the message. It was.
Well, we’re all pretty much doing our own thing right now. Maybe (if you guys ever get here ;D) we’ll do a campfire or something :)
Zane read the text aloud to Riley and they both sighed in relief. “At least we’re not missing anything,” Zane commented. “Do you have a spare by any chance?” Riley looked down at the ground and shook his head shamefully. “I took it out to make room for my bags. God, I’m so fucking dumb.” He continued to grumble and cuss under his breath. “It’s okay, Riley. Really. I’m here, you’re here. We’re together. We’ve got a car full of camping crap. And we’re kinda sorta within walking distance…ish.” Zane looked down the dirt path into the distance. “Maybe we could call Anya?”
“Yeah I guess we can. But it’s a lot of bags.” He continued. “We’ll just take what we need and come for the rest in the morning and figure out how to fix this mess before our phones die.” Riley suggested. Zane nodded and took Riley’s hand with a smile. “I told you everything will be fine. You’re here and I am, we can get though anything remember?” Zane said resting his head on his shoulder. Riley looked down at him and kissed his forehead. “And this is why I need you here.” He sated. “You just make everything better.” He continued as he pulled Zane in for a hug. “Well we better get going if we want to get there before 12 am.” Riley added with a laugh. “Right, let’s unload this thing and see what we need.” Zane answered as they let go of each other and went to the truck. Zane took both sleeping bags under his arms along with the buildable tent, as Riley took the other necessities. “You ready?” Riley asked. “Yep, just make sure you take the keys and don’t lock yourself out of the car. That would be the last thing we need.” Zane said as he nudged Riley. “I could only imagine.” Riley added as he got the keys and closed the door. “Ready.” He said with a smile as he stealthily took Zane’s hand in his as they started to walk down the path together.
As they walked down the dark path with nothing but a flashlight to illuminate the way, Zane made a quick phone call to Anya explaining the situation. She offered to have Owen come pick them up, to which Riley was a bit opposed at first, but he soon realized that not having to take the trek all the way over to the campground was worth dealing with their former enemy for a few minutes. They trudged along in blissful silence, basking in the strange but romantic turn of events the night had taken. Zane felt Riley squeeze his hand tighter and he turned away to hide his blushing grin. Riley nudged at Zane’s shoulder with his own, and they turned to face each other. The tiny peek of moonlight that shone between the cluster of trees made Riley’s eyes shine. Zane’s smile grew wider still as he realized how lucky he was. Without a word, he stole a kiss from his boyfriend’s lips. They stopped walking as their lips lingered against each other. As Zane started to pull away, Riley grabbed him by his hips and deepened the kiss, not wanting the moment to end. Mid-kiss, Zane’s phone started ringing, breaking the calm of the dark forest. He pulled away with a sigh and answered hastily. “You guys almost here?” he asked. “They better be,” Riley mumbled.
“They said they are almost here so let’s just keep on walking till we get closer to them.” Zane suggested. “Or..” Riley trailed off and he took Zane’s hand and pulled him into his chest of another kiss as they both dropped the bags on the floor. Riley’s hand slid to the back of Zane’s neck as Zane slowly put his finger though Riley’s belt loop and used it to pull him in. Out of the darkness of the rode a gleam of light started to show. Both pulled away knowing it was going to be Owen and Anya coming to pick them up. Riley bent down and picked up everything as he possible can and handing things to Zane in the processes. “Good, they’re here.” Riley said in a scoff and she stood back up wiping the dirt off the bag. The car stopped in front of them, they got things inside the car as fast as they good and sat in the back together. Zane tried to make the drive the least awkward as possible by starting a conversation with all four of them as Riley spoke a few times. Zane noticed how uncomfortable Riley was and took his hand moving closer to him. Riley smiled and placed his other hand over his and started speaking a little more becoming more comfortable with the whole situation. Once they finally reached the beach all four got out of the car and bother Riley and Zane took their belonging. “Thanks for everything.” Riley stated as he shook Owens hand. “It’s no problem, maybe tomorrow we can figure out how to fix that car.” He stated. “Yeah that would be great thanks.” He said with a smile as he hugged Anya and left.
”We made it!” Zane hollered with excitement. He dropped his bags on the ground for a quick victory fist-pump. Deciding to join in on the happiness, Riley let out a loud “WOOOO!” They looked around and saw all of the tents pitched. At the same time, they both noticed that they were without their own tent. They looked at each other and sighed simultaneously, as if they each knew what the other was thinking. “It’s in the car,” Riley pointed out. Zane clapped his hands together. “Welp, it’s a beautiful night,” he said. “We could always sleep under the stars.” Zane flashed his bright smile and picked up his bags again. They scoured the beach, searching for a comfortable empty spot to set up camp at. Finally, Riley chose a spot a bit distanced from the rest of the group, but still close enough to watch the fun from a distance and, if need be, get up and join. They laid out their sleeping bags side by side, and Zane sat Indian-style atop his. Riley sat down right next to Zane, scooting close and giving Zane a place on his shoulder to lean his head. “This isn’t it, you know,” Zane stated. Riley nodded in response. “I know. We’ve got so much time ahead of us. And even once we’re off at separate schools doing our own things, maybe even playing each other in football, we’ll still have each other.” Zane smirked halfheartedly. “But we’ve gotta make the most out of the time we have now, right?” “Mhm,” Riley answered, gazing up at the stars. Zane took the hint and did the same. “It’s now or never.”
