12 Principles of Islamic Liberation Theology by Dr. Hatem Bazian
1) Commitment to universal and indivisible justice
Silence become complicity.
Do not truncate issues by labeling them as “here”and “there.”
Our lifestyle is sustained by the oppression of people “there.”
2) Equality of all human beings
We are living in a racist structure, both locally and globally.
Resources are divided by racial structure.
Locally:
Disparity among the African American community.
Every 28 hours an African AMerican is shot by a police officer.
The nature of the structure has normalized this.
What if it was a white man?
Globally:
Do brown and black people get mourned over? Public displays and moments of silence?
3) All life is sacred
When a human being has died, one of your relatives have died.
We have all come from Adam.
4) All humans are endowed with divine dignity
Structures of governance have stolen that from us and reduced us to cubicle inhabitance.
We are all commodities in this post-industrialized society.
5) Freedom
The primordial human state.
No human being is born in bondage.
6) Oppression must be removed
You are responsible to combat oppression within your own scope.
Removing harm has the precedent over benefitting you.
Remove self-oppression.
Ego, need to have a “name.”
We worship ourselves, our thoughts and opinions.
7) Deal with Economic fairness based on contentment of all involved parties
The 1% issue.
Their wealth increased over 9% in the last year while the quality of life for other is declining.
Challenge neoliberal ideas.
Islamic banking = simply giving interest/riba a new name.
Format of a contract:
Bismillah,
Adam Smith
Darwin
The End
Jesus, and Muhammad peace be upon them are not sidekicks to big business.
Corporations run everything.
Realize what others are facing around the world as a result of big business.
Lives are being lost.
You step on people just to upgrade to the cubicle next to the window, then the one next to the bathroom, and finally your own office with a secretary.
Debt encourages cowardliness.
Defines and restricts by it.
8) Militarism in not divine, nor prophetic.
Defending oneself vs. running the economy.
If you want peace, stop selling weapons.
Guns are used for access to oil, markets, and natural resources.
Profits: not the ones that come from the heavens, but the ones deposited in the bank.
9) Principal
Prison industrial complex:
Food service, medical contracts, facilities, security personnel.
NOT a rehab or correctional facility.
America is #1 in amount of population imprisoned, and California is the #1 state.
Public housing industrial complex:
Real estate companies guaranteed checks by government.
Entertainment/sport industrial complex
Torture at Guantanamo Bay
There are 24 approved techniques.
UC Berkeley Professor redefined torture as anything prior to organ failure.
Breaching Geneva Convention treaties.
Same man teaching constitutional law.
10) Oppose all forms of racism, bigotry, xenophobia, ultranationalism, Islamophobia, and antisemitism
Muslim make up 0.013% of population in Poland yet there citizens and politicians are running anti-Islamization campaigns.
NAFTA disrupted the peace in Latin America, maybe that’s why Latinos coming here.
11) Custodian of the environment/world
The longer the supply chain is the more impact you are creating on the environment.
Eat local, buy local.
Be conscious of what you eat.
12) Religious dialogue should be focused on the text with context
Enables effective change.
Closing remarks:
You were placed on this earth to do magnanimous things. Take it seriously. Do not be the passing dust.
