“Retablos: Stories From a Life Lived Along the Border” by Word for Word at ZBelow
I’ve loved pretty much everything I’ve seen by Word for Word, and this is no exception. Playwright Octavio Solis’ memoir of growing up in El Paso, Texas, along the Mexican border is touching and heartbreaking and, at time, very funny. A terrific cast (especially Maria Candelaria, whose scowl just slayed me, and Ryan Tasker, who exhibited Robin Williams-like intensity) do terrific service to Solis’ memories of growing up the son of Mexican immigrants, and the joys and hardships they faced.
