omg we were actually talking about like contract negotiations and leagues vs. players in class recently and on one hand theres always gonna be a disconnect just because of the amount of money in play so like you said theories and examples that usually are about blue collared workers need to be put in different context. But like, there was a long time in the big four north american leagues that players werent even allowed to have AGENTS and event with that they can fuck you over (1)
but with sitting out it becomes a hard bargain because you have to hope they see that your lack of presence is hurting the team so if they are doing okay, you lose bargaining power since the teams only look at this from the money and success aspect and not a personal one (and thats not like a call out for the leafs thats every organization in the history of ever.) PR wise its turned against you for the fans because its painted as a player not being loyal and as said earlier, (2)
there is always gonna be a disconnect because of the amount of money involved. But the NHL is especially rocky with contracts, we’re seeing teams that trade players if they try to get help for pain medication addiction yet overprescribe them, lack of proper protocol for concussions and mocking those who ask for it, JT Brown got traded shortly after a simple silent protest. The league is already planning another lock out. its tough (3/3)
is the league planning a lockout or are well all just expecting it?
but yeah no, the league is in a position to (i think that they do) exploit players because all employers are in that position and the weak labor laws of both Canada and the United States don’t do anything to help.
and tbh the CBA is a joke. The only ground the players have really made is that they have fuck all for punishments (which is about the only place where I side against the players) but I think this unfair dynamic really shows in the Nylander case where he is not able to ask for a no trade clause, it would be one thing if he asked and the leafs said no. but the Leafs are not even allowed to give him one. That just doesn’t make sense to me (unless you’re tying to exploit workers which…..yeah that’s how capitalism works)
