Zebra pleco - Hypancistrus zebra

Length: 3 inches

This beautiful catfish has black-and-white stripes all over its body that give it its name.

There is a species of catfish in Lake Tanganyika in Africa, called Synodontis multipunctata, that tricks another fish into incubating its young. It targets fish who incubate their eggs in their mouth, laying its own eggs at the same time and mixing them together. The catfish’s young hatch earlier than the host’s eggs and grow by eating the host fish’s own young.

My first resin paintings finished since 2020! Had to relearn some things I’ll be implementing on future pieces! I am not sure if I will sell the zebra pleco, but the Samurai Blue Pacman frog will be on my etsy shop when I get a new batch of things ready to list. :)

I would have put Panaque cochliodon as #2.

Seeing the zebra pleco so low in this video surprised me. They were the most wanted/prestigious pleco when I first got into plecos. P. cochliodon was still #2.

I think I’m going to do a separate post breaking down the cost of these fish and such. I also want to know when/how Hypostomus luteus got so popular.

Finally, I can’t get the thought of Hypostomus luteus as the color of a yellow highlighter marker (phase 3) out of my head. “Oh yeah, the expensive yellow highlighter marker of the pleco world.”
