I read this as Ezekiel x Heather and I almost lost it.

Ezekiel Lapp sat on a linoleum floor in the middle of his room. Everything about his movements-- things like the jittery, stiff flexing of his legs and thighs as he sat cross-legged and how his jagged teeth peeked from discolored lips --spoke volumes of his improvement. Harold remembered how skittish he was at his most ‘feral’ (that word was rather dehumanizing, he would chide to his coworkers). Now, he can communicate much better, and even liked to interact with others as long as Harold was an arms-length away.

“Zeke,” he spoke softly, causing a chipped ear to perk up in interest. Ezekiel looked up at him, now ignoring the paper in front of his feet to stare intently at Harold’s hands. He watched as they formed two sort of arches and rolled downward, one hand moving to point at him. “How are you?” Sign language was the easiest way to teach communication to someone who had lost all semblance of the human language, and they were slowly trying to gain it back. They both knew that he’d never be able to speak like he used to, but that was okay.

Ezekiel pressed the fingers of his right hand against his lips, and opened the other hand in front of his chest. He lowered the hand at his face so that both were touching, and cleared his throat to speak. “G-guh... good. Doing good.” His pronunciation was a little warbled, and he didn’t even want to think about how words with an ‘s’ were going to go, but he was proud of his own answer.

“Very good, Ezekiel! I’m glad you’re speaking with your signs like Miss Milton taught you. Do you remember how to say my name?” Harold didn’t like speaking like this, as if his friend was nothing but a child with little understanding, but he didn’t think his fellow doctors would appreciate using the word “bitchin’“ with an inpatient.

Zeke gave a large grin, all jagged and unsafe tooth, and puffed his chest out. “Harold!” He clenched his fists and put them over his chest, hugging them tight: the sign for ‘love’. The man in front of him smiled right back, mimicking the sign at him right back. 

“I love you too, Ezekiel! Now, are you hungry?” He knew the sign for hungry almost too well, and didn’t bother to sign his answer as he skittered to his feet, nearly tripping on the smooth ground in excitement for lunch with his favorite person.

do harold and zeke share any hobbies or interests?

i think zeke gets really into learning about fantasy fiction when harold introduces it to him!

it’s also canon that harold has a lot of boy scout-y abilities that seem like things ezekiel might have experience doing as a farmhand (basket weaving, farm mechanics, rabbit raising) so maybe they like... garden together or something... raise gay crops. OWN CHICKENS!!!

yes.... i’m going to talk about this in the most canon aligned AU of them i have which is just like... total drama underdogs i guess HFMSHFND

so from the start harold is sort of a mentor figure to ezekiel and keeps him from the first elimination— because of this zeke pretty much immediately considers him a friend

zeke is fucking baby and doesn’t know a lot about technology that his parents kept him from, and harold, being the tech wiz he is, is DELIGHTED to show him everything he could bring on the island

“so it’s like a TV you can play games on!?”

duncan tries to punk both of them a lot but because of ezekiel’s High Density the pranks usually end up backfiring because he’s just so fuckin dumb they don’t work

harold is a little terrified but mostly thankful

at night they sneak out to light a bonfire and zeke talks about how he’s started to resent his parents for all that they kept from him and did to him for the sake of keeping him pure

harold is like um wow yikes when he hears about the stuff that his parents have done to him

“wait you mean your parents DONT beat you????”

harold’s immediately like Protect.mp3 but then realizes that ezekiel is surrounded by a force of pure luck and probably doesn’t need his protection anyway

he tries his best to be someone zeke can rely on regardless

zeke kisses him when the cameras are turned during one of the later bonfires as a contestant is getting eliminated

when the cameras turn back they’re both super red

“WHY DID YOU DO THAT” “WAS IT NOT A GOOD TIME”

it’s okay though because they both care about each other hardcore and they are dating now. harold knows that his love for leshawna, though intense, was something fleeting and not really grounded in an emotional bond. he still cares about her deeply though

leshawna is like Protective Mother of the Gays actually. she’s great and probably is the one who helps ezekiel find a better living situation after the island so he’s very grateful

ezekiel doesn’t look it but he’s like decently strong which terrifies harold. imagine your 5’1 BF being able to move an entire couch

i have a headcanon that zekes family was some kind of mormon? the way they sort of presented them and their beliefs is very Kooky Christian Denomination and mormons are probably the best descriptor of that group.

anyway zeke doesn’t know a lot of historical/scientific stuff because his parents told him false information and harold has to help him

because of their big height difference, when they cuddle harold looks like a big fucking gangly spider wrapped around his BF

ezekiel LOVES kissing harold’s face just like his cheeks and (if he can reach it) his forehead and harold thinks it’s fucking CUTE!!!!
