what do you think about the show being renewed for a fourth season?

But in reality, I think I’ll wait and see how this season plays out before I begin judging. But, you know, ever since s1 when Treem said the show had “a three season arc”, I’ve been opposed to it being renewed for the sake of it being renewed. If their plan was a three season arc, then stick to a three season arc. Not that Treem would ever do this. She basically changed the whole premise of the show but yeah. Let’s see.

Ok but to pair Alison and Helen up just for the sake of it?? Both of them are hetero and on top of that they'll always harbor resent for one another based on their situation and constantly being pitted against each other. I'm fine with them separate as long as they're not overcompensating for the men in their lives.

Just for the sake of it? Can you please elaborate on how I want to pair them up “just for the sake of it”? If the show had centred around an affair between Helen and Alison, not only would it have been as groundbreaking as Treem seems to think it is right now (which, lmao, it really isn’t), it would also have made a much more compelling and flexible plot. And woah, do you literally think I’m not aware of the fact that this show is painfully heteronormative and white? Like… do you think perhaps that’s one of the reasons I wish it could centre around a wlw relationship, or? I obviously know it isn’t going to happen (that’s sort of the point of an AU) – Sarah Treem is garbage, she would never be so forward thinking as to cook up a plot that focuses primarily on women and wherein said women aren’t constantly shat on.

And “both of them are hetero”, are you serious right now? Well I’ve got news for you, Sarah Treem-jam: until their sexualities are explicitly addressed on the actual show, you have no goddamn right to just assume that they’re heterolinis. Jesus fucking christ.

Tbh I'm more angry at the melodramatic depths Treem has had to go to keep Cole relevant. Like it was always obvious that she identified most (and thus went bust) with the Noah storyline, but I'm convinced that she's about to have Alison grovel to get back into Cole's bed AGAIN just to keep him in the fold, proving that she is nothing more than a homewrecker to these writers. I'd be mad as hell if I were Ruth Wilson

gOD, yes. I mean I still think the obsession with Noah is a massive issue but I couldn’t agree more. What they did to Alison last season was a character assassination in its most literal form. Multiple times, they established that Alison was afraid of Cole – only to send her straight back to him. She’s like, “I can’t live, I can’t move on if I’m here and around you” (paraphrasing) and then they make her have a new child with him? Like?? PLEASE, can we not constantly shit all over one of the main female characters just to talk up male characters, to make characters relevant for the show’s premise? But it’s highkey what they’re doing with Helen, too – it’s what they do on this show. They’re making both Alison and Helen overly attached to Cole and Noah, respectively. Like, it’s seemingly unfathomable to them (i.e. Treem and the writers) that women could somehow be happy without douchebag men in their lives.

But honestly, and if I’m right this is a purely accidental #spoiler (pls don’t @ me), I have a feeling that if the show is renewed for a fourth season, Ruth won’t be onboard. Not only do I think she wants to be able to focus on film and theatre more, but you also don’t go out and subtly (they’re still her employers) drag your show for its treatment of female characters if you’re perfectly content with how things are going.

Is it just me or was that first episode super boring?? I just don't think I am going to want to watch anymore. It was like we were supposed to feel sorry for Noah. The only shining moment for me was when the grad student asked about the "rape" scene.

Well, I agree that it was painfully dull but I do retain some hope that the fact that the next episode won’t be 60 minutes solely dedicated to The Manbaby will make it all a bit more manageable. I’m still appalled by the fact that Noah is put on such a pedestal. He’s really not that interesting of a character that his plot line can keep people entertained for a full hour, so that was a HUGE mistake, I think. I personally wasn’t impressed by the rape scene debacle. I think it turned into Sarah Treem’s own defence of her choice to blur the lines of consent more than a proper debate on the subject of consent. If anything, this was just a confirmation that it was, indeed, non-consensual.

Ok, I know everyone’s oh-so certain Cole is Joanie’s dad but... are we, like, sure that paternity test Helen had made was actually accurate? Because Joanie doesn’t exactly look like Cole... Is it bad casting or is Luisa in fact the father of Alison’s baby?

Maura's category is not easy!

Lmao, yes, it is. With the exception of Queen Lena Headey who ALWAYS gets snubbed, the remaining GOT girls couldn’t act if their lives depended on it. I haven’t seen Constance Zimmer’s show, so I can’t comment on the quality of her performance but... I mean. And that leaves us with Dame Maggie, Maura’s main competition, who got fucked over by Julian Fellowes this season (who didn’t though...) but she’s Dame Maggie, this was Downton’s final season and also the Emmys are a sucker for giving honour Emmys like that. So it’s the perfect category to be nominated in – must less competition than in Lead Actress where the likes of Keri Russell, Claire Danes, Taraji P. Henson, Robin Wright and Viola fucking Davis are nominated. I’d say her chances of winning are perhaps even slightly higher than 50/50.

how would you predict maura's chances of winning tonight?

Her category is relatively weak, so I’d say she has a good chance. A much better chance than Ruth would have had last year, had she been nominated, because there’s much bigger competition in the Lead Actress category than in Supporting Actress. I’d say Dame Maggie is her biggest competitor because this was the last season of Downton and Dame Maggie is a Legend™.
