Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson lead 2016 Basketball Hall of Fame class

One of the most star-studded classes in HOF history was announced on Monday.

Coach John McLendon and player Zelmo Beaty to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.  Coach McLendon Coached at North Carolina A&T and Kentucky State, but is most famous for leading Tennessee A&I to three straight NAIB National Championships (1957, 1958 and 1959).  The 1957 National Championship represented the first collegiate National Championship won by a historically black school.  Zelmo Beaty was a star at Prairie View A&M, and later in the NBA (St. Louis Hawks) and ABA (Utah Stars).

Zelmo Beaty, a star center in the N.B.A. who left the league to play for its upstart competitor, the A.B.A., where he immediately took the previously mediocre Utah Stars to victory in the 1971 championship series in his first season, died on Aug. 27 at his home in Bellevue, Wash. He was 73.

Zelmo Beaty was a star for the Hawks when they first moved to Atlanta and later for Utah.
