I found this spectacular lady in my room and got a few pictures of her, but she was rather mysterious and hard to photograph, as she was entirely black with no markings whatsoever! So I kept her for a day in an insect cup with a paper towel and water, intending to take better pictures in sunlight before releasing her, but when I opened the cup and unraveled the paper towel...
I discovered she had chosen to lay her egg sac! And was valiantly guarding it!
Since I had already disturbed her I snapped a few pictures anyway, then carefully wrapped her back up and placed her back in the cup. I didn't think trying to relocate the family to the wild would be a good idea right now, especially since the egg sac was sewn to a bright white paper towel?
I've been keeping her in a dark corner of my closet, misting the cup every day as I do for my mantises. I offered her some fruit flies and a bluebottle fly but they've gone uneaten. I'm not sure if it's because she's not interested in those foods or if she's far too busy guarding her babies to eat. I don't dare disturb the paper towel a second time, so I can only hope she's still alive. I'm simply keeping watch for the hopeful emergence of spiderlings.
Best I can determine is that she's some sort of ground spider? Located in Denver, CO. Let me know if there's anything else I can do for her! I wonder how long her babies might take to hatch? It's been about three weeks :0
Oh, what a delight! I love her. It's very possible she won't eat until the spiderlings have hatched, assuming they've survived. It obviously depends on species, but two-three weeks is average hatching time for spider eggs. And you submitted this a week ago, so maybe you've got spiderlings? Or possibly they've perished or were never viable, but these things happen.
Anyway she's definitely a ground spider, I think most likely in the genus Zelotes. Please feel free to update if there've been any changes!
Strange Technical Issue
I recently purchased a Zelotes C-12 Gaming Mouse, knowing full well it is only Windows supported. I believed that by using Windows Parallels (which i have on my Mac) that I could run the program that comes with it which allows you to customize the side buttons, however the mouse isn’t recognized when I try to launch the program. It functions fully well aside from this, moving and clicking as it should, so is this not working because I’m trying to use Parallels so it isn’t a direct connection to the mouse or some crap? TIA
