When zenitsu saw you being carried in from your last mission he felt his stomach sink. He ran over to you to make sure you were ok. When the person carrying you told him you were fine just unconscious with a few bruises, zenitsu insisted that he was to come with you. When the person complied zenitsu was on his way to the butterfly estate with you.
When you woke up however things took a toll for the worst. “Y/n?! Ha! You’re awake! Do you feel alr-“ zenitsu was saying before he was cut off by a scream. That scream came from you though. “Who the hell are you?! Where am I?! What... what’s going on...?” You said. But your words started becoming quieter as you started thinking. You couldn’t remember anything from what felt like the past year.
You could remember your training... but then... nothing. As if the memories were just... lost. “But how’s that possible?” You asked shinobu. “Well it could be because you hit your head? That’s what we noticed happens the most commonly” she said calmly yet sweetly. “Well how do we fix it?!” Zenitsu spoke up.
He was oddly quiet this whole conversation. He rarely ever took charge. Actually scratch that he never took charge. Even with you most times. But now to see this unknown man taking charge out of concern for you? You felt odd... almost as if you know him but you can’t put your finger on the name... ir your history together.
Days, weeks, months went by and you haven’t gotten all your memories back. Only a few from the earlier moths of the year you’ve lost. But those months don’t contain the memories of the man who is sitting beside you. You’ve grown quite attached to zenitsu not knowing why but he doesn’t seem to mind.
You’re on a temporary break from missions and zenitsu only has to go on one every once and a while so he can take care of you. You’ve seen the odd look in his eyes when he looks at you. One of love yet pain. You want to remember you really do... but whenever you try you get told not to by him for you might “hurt yourself” he always says.
“Why do you even care so much?!” You yelled back. You got into an argument with zenitsu one day because you had been trying to remember. “Because...” he said shakily. “Because what?!” You yelled back. “Because you’re the only person who’s loved me back!” He finally spit out. “W-what...” you said. Now you’re the one who’s stuttering and he’s the one who’s yelling.
“It’s hurts... it hurts so much to not be able to kiss you everyday and tell you that I love you! Because I couldn’t be there on that mission! I couldn’t be there to save you! ...not that I would’ve done much anyway...” he said. Yoh felt your chest ache for him. You didn’t know why you felt so attached to him until now.
You still loved him. You have no known memories of him and yet you’ve grown to love him over these months you’ve spent together. “Zenitsu I-“ you started. You noticed now that he was crying. Which only pained you more to see. “Zenitsu I love you...” you said. He looked up at you from the price of wood he was starring at.
“You... you what?” He said shakily. “You... I... I love you too.” Now tears were streaming down your face as you walked over to hug him. He buried his face in the crook of your neck still sobbing. You stayed like that for a while wanting to let each other know that you were still there.
