Zeps Fall in Quarters
Shenandoah's run to the Ohio State Dual Tournament championships ended in the quarterfinal round Sunday. The Zeps were seeded eighth after winning the Region 22 championship and drew the unenviable task of facing top-seed Milan Edison in the quarterfinal round. Edison handled the Zeps by a wide margin, 66-3, on the way to capturing the team dual championship. Shenandoah wasn't shut out, however, as heavyweight Easton Hitchens secured a decision in his head-to-head match, 4-1. It was a memorable run for Shenandoah, despite the ending. The regional championship was the school's first in any sport and has raised the bar for Shenandoah wrestling going forward.
Nailers Heating Up
Don't look now but the Wheeling Nailers have won three of their last four games, including scoring 11 goals in the their last two. The highlight of the stretch is a 5-3 road victory against Central-division leading Cincinnati on Friday. Yushiroh Hirano returned to the lineup on Friday and the team's second-leading scorer wasted little time getting back into the fold. In two games, Hirano posted two goals and one assist. Following the big win against the Cyclones, Wheeling returned home and treated the home crowd to a 6-1 hammering of the Fort Wayne Komets. The Nailers are still in fifth in the Central but with 51 points and a 6-3-1-0 record in their last 10 games, are potentially poised to make a move up the standings. Next up is a Wednesday home context against Reading. The Royals are second in the North divison and are 8-1-1-0 in their last 10. The Nailers activated forward Brad Drobot from reserve and returned defenseman Craig Skudalski to the reserve roster.
Basketball Marks and Milestones
Bellaire senior do-all Katrina Davis and Shadyside's recently crowned scoring champion Kelly Hendershot were both selected to play in the Ohio North-South game. Cambridge junior Taylor Slaughter became the school's single-season 3-point leader when she surpassed the 57 mark during the Bobcats' sectional victory against Barnesville. Next up is a Wednesday meeting with Union Local in Morristown. A pair of Lady Hilltoppers reached career milestones this weekend. Junior guard Audrey Tingle eclipsed the 500-assist mark with six assists. She's only the sixth player in West Liberty women's basketball history to do so, joining an illustrious group. Morgan Brunner also had a memorable moment, draining her 200th career three pointer. The former Linsly standout is the 14th player in program history to surpass 200 career triples.
