Things we are looking at: no-voc paints

Our new house needs painting, top to bottom, inside and out. This will give us the opportunity to test out a variety of no-VOC (or zero VOC) paints. Something I'm really looking forward to trying is a glossy paint without VOCs which has not been available until recently. We have been carefully choosing colors and shopping for the paint from these brands included below. Stay tuned for the results. Here are all of our current contenders:

Our current "champion" :

Benjamin Moore Natura

We have used Benjamin Moore's Natura many times already and it's really been our standard paint since its release. In our last house most of the rooms were painted with Natura in Lemonade, Cumulus Cotton & Icy Moon Drops. We generally do all of our own painting, but we did have a big chunk of the last house professionally painted. We insisted the painters use Natura and though they complained at first, thought it way too expensive, once they started painting they were hooked. We love that it can be tinted in any of the BM colors, the fact that the colorants do not up the VOC content and that it goes on easily and holds up well even with heavy abuse from dirty children. The professional painters thought the coverage was great and loved the lack of smell. The one room we managed to paint before moving in, our children's room, was done with Natura in Icy Moon Drop & already have a gallon of Lemonade ready to go for our sunroom. Both chosen for continuity of color to help our children quickly feel more at home in the new house. So far no other low or no VOC paint that we have used has please us as much as Natura, but we do have a few new options to try out.

The new challengers are:

Yolo Colorhouse

I had considered driving in to Brooklyn to pick up some Yolo to try out long ago, but it was always easier to go to the local paint shop a few blocks from our house and pick up more Natura. Now that its available through Home Depot, we are finally giving it a shot in a big way. We have chosen to purchase 5 gallons of Dream .01 to use in the new house. The color is very pretty and the price is significantly lower than Natura (as well as the others listed below), so it will be nice if it preforms well too. We chose Dream .01 using some super-sized chips and comparing it to several other blues that we know we already love. It was close to those, but with a little something extra that we hope will work well to brighten up a huge chunk of our new house.

Mythic:

Another brand I've been really wanting to try for a very long time, but with limited access, it's been easier to stick to what's at hand. However, now that Mythic ships anywhere & has a gloss version of their paint, I cannot resist. We will be using the Mythic Gloss on all of our trim and doors. Some zero VOC paint lines offer a small range of colors, but not Mythic. They have a huge color selection, as well as a few designer palettes plus they will color match any competitor's color. Since white is not always white and because I really didn't want to wait for a sample first, we have ordered it color matched to BM Super White even though it seems a bit silly to color match white. Even with the color match, ordering was easy and the paint shipped within a day. It's due to arrive very soon.

Lullaby:

The newest line of the group, but still quite impressive- super safe, great colors, many options and superb coverage. So impressive that I am specifically choosing a room to give to Lullaby just so I can test it. (I actually have had a complimentary sample of their chalkboard paint that they sent me to test out right before we moved and I'm still looking for the right spot) I have a few chips on the way of some of their lovely colors, but they do also color match so I am considering matching to BM's Cumulus Cotton for the playroom (the color of our old playroom). Or perhaps I'll just choose one of their colors for my bedroom. Lullaby also offers a glossy Door & Trim Paint that I plan to test out on some furniture. And of course they have the chalkboard paint in some very wonderful colors. (Once I figure out where to use the Chalkboard Paint sample, I will post a review. All other mentions of Lullaby paint are purely of my own choosing.)

As for primer, we will be using zero VOC primers as well from both Natura & Yolo Colorhouse to start. I will post updates as we test out each of our new Zero VOC options. We have an endless sea of rooms, trim, doors & furniture to paint, so we will have lots to report.
