Wednesday, October 28: Tenet, “Watching You Burn”
Century Media probably thought they had a sure thing on their hands when they released Tenet’s Sovereign in 2009. After all, the group was basically Strapping Young Lad without Devin Townsend, and with ex-Forbidden and occasional Testament axeman Glen Alvelais as a utility player and Steve “Zetro” Souza at the mic, Tenet essentially merged three different waves of thrash. And “Watching You Burn” was an effective fusion of these different, well, tenets of thrash, from the dynamics in the arrangements to the violence in the playing (especially from Hoglan) to Zetro’s snarl, which not only sounded thicker and angrier than during Exodus’ late ‘80s prime, but more than kept up with the aggression put forth by his younger teammates. Because of this, the track didn’t sound tethered to any era, not even to the late ‘00s, but unleashed something that holds up rather well even as it remained fundamentally thrash. Of course, Tenet didn’t last beyond the one record as all involved found themselves busy with other things, but “Watching You Burn” was a lethal number that showed this collaboration was on to something.
