Biography

Born in Beijing and raised in Singapore, Jingna Zhang is a fashion and fine art photographer and director based in New York City and Seattle. Inspired with love for the Pre-Raphaelites and Japanese anime, Jingna’s work interweaves Asian aesthetics with western art styles, bringing unique visions of painterly and fantastical images to fashion and fine art photography. 

Before photography, Jingna was a world-class air rifle shooter representing Singapore at the Commonwealth Games and World Cup. She was the only female founder of a North American esports team in StarCraft 2 and was once a concept artist and illustrator’s agent, with clients including LucasArts, Amazon Publishing, and Sony Online Entertainment.

Zhang Jingna:

Zhang Jingna is a fashion and fine art photographer that is based out of New York City and Seattle. In college Jingna majored in fashion design before she dropped out so she could pursue her passion which was photography. Jingna was listed as a Forbes Asia 30 Under 30, and is one of today’s leading female fashion photographers. She has worked with several big time companies, but the one Jingna is featured in the most is the magazine BAZAAR. Besides of BAZAAR Jingna has worked for Vogue and Elle, and Jingna is becoming a very powerful influencer in the photography community.

Advice for photography enthusiasts looking to go professional

Be realistic and honest with yourself, understand what and how much you’re willing to sacrifice, be it school, career, social life, or income. Think about what you would be willing to do if things don’t pan out, be it part-time schooling or part-time work while you keep trying. It’s never easy to succeed and sustain going pro and freelance in the beginning, I know people take anywhere between half a year to even a few, it will take dedication and luck, but hard work and perseverance is key.

Lighting requirements for her work

She started off with just one hotlight in her apartment when she was 18, so she used to work with just one light at any time for a picture. She have the Profoto D1 500 Air now which is what she use mostly these days, sometimes paired with an Elinchrom 53″ Rotalux Octa. When she need more complicated setups for editorials and commercial shoots she uses  a range of things from beauty dish to soft boxes to striplights, etc.
