Ernesto DjéDjé - Zadie Bobo (1977)
Catchy soulful Afrofunk from Ivorian musical pioneer Ernesto DjéDjé.
Who ? Ernest Djédjé, the King of Ziglibithy, a genre he invented and was the main (only?) representant of in Ivory Coast until his mysterious death in 1983. He was 35.
What ? His second album, released in 1977.
Where ? In a sunday flea market close to my home. I paid a quick visit and saw this bunch of water damaged African LP’s.
Why ? They were all releases from second part of the 70′s, I was curious even if I had no knowledge of what I was taking.
When ? 2010 ? something like that. A sunday for sure :)
Was it cheap ? 1 euro each
Highlights ? This album is a winner. When I finally listened to it, a few days after finding it, you should have seen my face : it contained one song I was in love with, taken from mp3blog internet days (from Soulsides if you know this), without knowing where It was coming from. So this Zadie-bobo came out of the speakers and It was ‘wow’. Zibote also is worth listening. A wonderful feel good African album.

Sunday morning flea markets are seldom the occasion of amazing discovery and for one good memory you often have dusty fingers for lame records. But I still remember fondly this time when a woman was selling a bunch of used, worn, water damaged African records. Among them, there was Ernesto Djéjé’s Le roi du Ziglibithy. Le Roi because he was the originator and the only representative of this style until his early and mysterious death at the age of 35. When I put the needle on the record, I recognized instantaneously an irresistible track I had been in love with for years. These are moments that keep up the faith.
