Paulinho Nogueira is certainly not the most prominent name of bossa nova but this album from 1972 could surprise you : first class arrangements (Rogerio Duprat, José Briamonte, Luiz Arruda Paes) on beautiful songs mostly penned by the guitarist himself, this album is a very solid listen from start to end. if Rogerio's touch is immediatly recognizable and makes him almost a co-composer, the big chill for me is given by the elegant arrangements of José Briamonte on the songs Um, dois, trés and P'ra você que vai chegar, with their discreet samba feel.
Not clear what executives had in mind with this cover, maybe trying to attract the listener looking for some feel good festive brazilian music. Not sure it was the best way to prepare to the wildness of Tuca's singing on this song, sounding more like some crazy indie brazilian folk than patropi.
I first heard this song in the 2000's on a french compilation named Brazil 70 vol 3 (recommended) and it has not left me since, really the song of a life. I finally bought this record last week at parislovesvinyl event. I could afford to let it in the bins while checking elsewhere if it was not cheaper because Os Cariocas are a kind of acquired taste and most people will not jump on it. Their sophisticated harmonies always manage to catch me and this song is just a jewel from Marcos Valle's vaults taken to another level, the perfect meeting between between melodic évidence and sophistication.
