So it was like a one off and he wants to carry on/take it further but you don’t?
pretty much, other than the further part.

CPU really is the fastest you can afford at the time (or you’ll be forever playing catch-up with them). I’d personally stick with Win7 over Win8 until a few more Win8 updates have come down the pipe!

Oh, and another thing, nVidia cards tend to run on the hot side - if you are squeezing all that into a Micro-ATX case don’t skimp on the cooling and airflow or the GPU will cook the motherboard and Intel mobo chipsets really don’t like running hot!
Well for the CPU I decided to go with an i5-3570K so it is good for now. Like right now I am running on a Core 2 Duo E4400 so anything is practically an upgrade... Even though my CPU is quite strong right now. My current computer I got like around 7-8 years ago. Still runs like a champ because of ram and video card changes and os upgrades. So getting just a solid build now will just last me until I am able to actually afford large systems.
Right now I am actually thinking trying to find a micro ATX case that has good air flow. I keep seeing some reviewed on hardware canucks that does the job well. Though I am looking at the possibility of normal ATX just for the multiple SLI options... Even though I will be having 1 card for a long while... Then for the windows 8 I might as well just get it and wait for the updates, since I don't have a legit copy of windows 7 that I can easily upgrade from. Though I think I want to just get a legit copy of 7 now and wait until the inevitable windows 9 rears its head... Although I feel that nothing much would change between 8 and 9 since Microsoft seems to be wanting to take windows in to a more touchy-feely kind of experience. So maybe I should just jump in to windows 8 and hope that inexpensive capacitive desktop touch screen monitors become a thing to get around the whole touch thing or maybe trying to find out if track pads that work with 8 is a thing yet.

I mean if the price isn’t and issue then I’d go Ivy i7 quad. One of the nicer ones with a larger cache
and if price is an issue? like below $250

Intel, 16gb (though this depends on the programs you’ll be using cause from experience it’s not all that hard to use up 8), annnnd if unless you just felt you needed and ssd for startup then I’d get a 7200-10000rpm HDD
yeah i decided to stick with intel, had them with almost every computer i owned... but that raises a new questions... i3 or i5 or i7 and Ivy bridge or Sandy bridge?
