Lost in Secular Love - Walkthrough (will fix this later)

Personal Walkthroughs for Lost in Secular Love.

PLEASE DON’T STEAL.

NOTE 1: For now this is a little messy, but I will post a proper Walkthrough later, so hopefully for now, this will do. (I will rename this to “Common route” later and then add individual posts for each character)

NOTE 2: The choices/answers might sound a little different in the official release. These answers are from when I worked on the game 1 year ago. I will update the walkthrough later.

Small note: If you have equal affection for all guys, or more than just one, you will automatically start ZiQIn. As for ends: You will bad end if you got less than 8 affection points.

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

ZhiKong:

Meditation Hall: “She sounds so pitiful. I shall release her on the sly.”

Click on the Dining Hall

HuiHai:

Guest Hall: “Actually…”

Click on the Gate.

ZiQing:

Garden: “Cover it up”

Click on YunXin house.

Chapter 3

ZhiKong:

Library: “Change the topic”

HuiHai:

Guest Hall: “To be honest…”

ZiQing:

Warehouse: “But they are all still good…”

You now have 5 options. Two are extra scenarios. The other three decides the guy you want to pursue. NOTE: You can only pick two places, the game will automatically go to the next chapter.

ZhiKong:

Click on Library.

Click on Main Hall.

HuiHai:

Click on Meditation hall

(pick any location)

ZiQing:

Click on YunXin house

(pick any location)

Ziqing: The Metal God of War and His Blades of Chaos

I’m trying to play like three games at the same time and it’s not working well, but anyway, one of them is Lost in Secular Love, the other otome game by the MVTML devs. It doesn’t hit my personal preferences for drama and darkness and larger-scale conflict, but it still definitely ranks near the top for enjoyability among the otome games I’ve tried.

Very importantly, I like the MC. The MC fucks. She does not have Tengyu’s priceless femdom energy, but she fucks. She has assertiveness and humor and self-esteem and character development. I know very little about Buddhism, but I can appreciate the conflict of someone so practical and earthy--seeking spiritual enlightenment--for pragmatic reasons, and trying to figure out what she actually wants out of life once those basic pragmatic reasons aren’t there anymore.

One other random thing I appreciated was that this game has a basically equal gender ratio among major characters, which is pretty impressive given the necessity of having all those dudes there to date. There are so many cool old lady characters in there, it’s great.

Also, although MVTML definitely has the better art, I think I actually like LISL’s soundtrack more. There’s quite a few catchy tracks that are nice for background listening, and I really like the ED with its MV.

I actually wasn’t trying to end up on Ziqing’s route--I’d wanted to save him for later--but that’s how it went. Some thoughts, spoilers below the cut:

First of all, he shares Wu Zixu’s VA, but his voice is a lot less hot and growly in this one. :(( I vastly prefer Wu Zixu’s voice. :((( Wu Zixu’s voice is so hot, man. :((((

Anyway Ziqing’s just way less my type in general. Something about constantly arguing with and getting judged by a dude your own age is way more hackles-raising than constantly arguing with and getting judged by an older dude. I don’t enjoy his nostalgia for a version of you who doesn’t exist anymore. I don’t enjoy his self-righteousness and pushiness. Also you don’t get to land nearly as satisfying smackdowns on him, and I’m fairly sure you have to apologize to him more than he has to apologize to you. I recognize he has valid points and good intentions! I just want to deck his smug face!

(Alas, my favorite LI in this game so far is the one voiced by Goujian’s VA. u__u)

But I can have some level of intellectual appreciation for Ziqing. I do like the game’s take on the “separated childhood friends” trope, where they’re just familiar enough after all these years to take liberties with each other but strangers enough that those liberties come off wrong. I can appreciate his attempts to look out for the people he cares about in his asshole way.

I’m just...not interested in dating him. Too busy wishing that MVTML had sex scenes as horny as this game’s. With the BE I was like...honestly, good on the MC! This is hardly even a BE! She’s married into a prosperous merchant family, so she’s good on money! She has a cute kid! She’s still young and healthy and can find someone else! Who needs Ziqing! Although, tbf, the writing is generally good enough that I can buy that this reaction is what it was going for. A big theme in his route is the MC figuring out what she wants for herself rather than just going along with what her family needs and what other people want. And she gets the BE by...basically not finding it in herself to care enough. She doesn’t care enough to save him and she doesn’t care enough to be that devastated by his death, and maybe that’s the tragedy.

(Anyway, I totally still plan to write some Massive Comprehensive MVTML Metas, but I’m still waiting on the updates to the English translations...that they said would be done months ago...plz I don’t want to get a fresh set of dialogue screencaps if they’re just gonna update at any time...)
