Okie, so. I don’t really have good news.
I’ve gone through long periods of depression. My longest was roughly two years. It’s not uncommon for me to get them months at a time.
And shitty day to day life can feel so much like you’re depressed, because you are in essence depressed. It sucks, it brings you down, and it’s hard.
You could very easily be going through either.
Here’s a couple suggestions on what you can do to lighten it up. I know from experience how hard it can be to follow through, but in my experience when I’ve managed to follow through, I felt better.
It wasn’t long lasting but it WAS a reprieve.
1. Talk with your friends. It can be about how you’re feeling if you want to vent, but in general just talk about stuff that typically makes you feel happy.
2. Physical affection. Hugs, laying in someone’s lap, getting your hair brushed or head rubbed, back scratches, etc. anything that helps you feel connected to other people physically.
3. Watch your favorite movies/tv shows. When you can and as you want to.
4. Watch sad movies/listen to sad music/read sad stories. Sometimes crying scalds. Sometimes it helps.
5. Read your favorite stories.
6. Chocolate and tea. Brownies and milk. Cake and hot chocolate. Once a day, reward yourself for getting out of bed and dealing with life.
7. Exercise. (I personally hate this option, but I know it helps some people.)
8. Do something nice for someone else. Just because.
9. Play video games/board games/puzzles/with toys if that makes you feel good.
10. Pets. Pet the pets. Snuggle the pets. Fuzz therapy is awesome.
Like I said, I know exactly how hard it can be to do these things. Well over half the time I can’t make myself do any of these things, I just sit and stare into the void. But when I DO manage? It does help.
It’s just a reprieve and those reprieves tend to be pretty short. But sometimes, it’s the reprieves that get you through another day.
Thank you for this, darling. I still don’t know where the hell I am in regards to my depression and whether or not this is a depressive period, but I am hoping hoping hoping that I can get through this. I the mean time, this list will definitely help - you’re a dear to send it <3
