You know what annoys me? The fact that there are so many instrument puns, but I'm sitting here with a zither and I can't think of one joke or pun for it.
I have been listening to zithers all wrong.
Do smoke: after waking up; after a meal; with guests; while writing; when growing tired from reading; while waiting for a good friend who hasn't shown up yet.
Don't smoke: while listening to a zither; feeding cranes; appreciating orchids; observing plum blossoms; making ancestral offerings; attending the morning court assembly; sleeping with a beautiful woman.
From Lu Yao's Smoking Manual as quoted in Charles Mann's new 1493, just out from Knopf.
Hello folks, if you haven't already heard, Mississippi Records now has a website. Long without a proper web presence, this Portland-based label/shop curates collections of field recordings and reissues them on vinyl - usually in runs of 1,000 or less. And the best part is that the records are really fairly priced! This track I'm sharing today comes from an older release of one of the all-time greats and mysterious characters of American music, Washington Phillips. His earnest voice combined with his skilled zither playing gives him a special place in my musical heart.
