A Couple Emjen Headcanons: Nine and Twelve (Zankyou no Terror)
-The names Kokonoe Arata and Hisami Touji mean absolutely nothing to Nine and Twelve; they’re just fake names and they’ve had a dozens of those. When she first starts living with them, Lisa slips up and calls them by those names all the time. Nine gets snappy whenever she does. Twelve is so infatuated he’d probably let her call him anything, but she quickly realizes that for all intents and purposes their names are Nine and Twelve and starts to call them that.
-Nine did not always need glasses, in fact he only started wearing them in the last couple years. His eyesight is rapidly deteriorating as a result of the Project Athena side effects. He is capable of going without the glasses (as is shown in a number of episodes), but the resulting eyestrain makes his headaches more prevalent, so he tries to wear the glasses whenever possible.
-There is no big brother in Nine and Twelve’s relationship. Though at first glance it seems like Nine is the one who is always taking care of Twelve, Nine is as hopelessly dependent on Twelve as Twelve is on him.
-The kernel of the idea that becomes the Sphinx bombings is Twelve’s, but Nine is the one who brings it to fruition.
-Nine is the more moral and idealistic of the two. He’s the one who emphasized that there couldn’t be causalities in the bombings. Twelve doesn’t necessarily want to kill people, but he’d be more willing to accept it than Nine would.
-Nine is a pessimist and Twelve is an optimist. That said, both boys are woefully optimistic about the chances of their plan working out. Even if they’d both survived the last episode, the chances that their story wouldn’t have just gotten swept under the rug are high. The best chance their plan had would have been if Nine actually got to have his press conference.
-Twelve came to the Settlement after Nine and underwent less treatment before they escaped. That’s why he doesn’t appear to have any of the symptoms Nine and Five do. He could probably have lived another couple of years, while Nine had a matter of months.
-Neither Nine nor Twelve really expected to survive the aftermath of the Sphinx bombings. Nine had a greater grasp of his own mortality than Twelve, but still counted on Twelve outliving him.
-Nine dies of either a heart attack or an aneurysm. Given his other symptoms (headaches, ringing in ears, etc.), I think the aneurysm is more likely.
