zoevulpez replied to your post: does anyone else ever feel like season 0 Atem’s...
Hmmm, maybe, but in my case I think it’s rather the contrast between s0 and dm that started the discussion as well as the fact he’s the main character and all the others were introduced as the bad guys
mmmmmbut like.. the only thing Atem does that you could say is bad is be willing to call Kaiba’s bluff because he wants to save Yugi’s grandpa more than he cares if Kaiba follows through on it and that’s dm, not s0.
s0 Atem is literally stopping people who would cause harm the only way the rules of that particular universe allows like absolutely any other anime protagonist of the era would. And also like, every comic book hero ever.
and being introduced as a bad guy or not doesn’t really change the fact that actual actions should be measured against actual actions, especially if we’re engaging in a debate that’s meant to be serious and not just a funny ‘haha Yami set something on fire again’ joke.
this got long so here’s a read more:
For example, I listed those three in particular (Atem/Malik/Rishid), because it’s a nice scale from “protagonist” to “villain” to “antagonistic person with highly understandable reasons”. Judging each of those against an equivalent, there’s an obvious discrepancy in treatment.
Atem gets judged as if the actions he took were against innocent people instead of horrible abusive people. The severity of Malik’s childhood is often lessened to something that ‘doesn’t excuse’ what he did to his father. Rishid’s obviously sympathetic reasons for helping his brother kind of just... ignored wholesale by the fandom to the point of little to no attention for the character, let alone positive attention.
Meanwhile, Pegasus, whose actions were taken against innocent people, is absolved by the fandom into being the affable wine uncle, including finding no issue with him being included in anime spinoff material as a ‘good guy’. Yami Bakura is woobified despite being the literal embodiment of evil possessing a teenage boy (twice over). People completely ignore that Kaiba wanted to let Jonouchi drown, and are far more willing to excuse his sins against assorted innocent people due to his upbringing than people are willing to do so for Malik. And the list goes on.
Hey, you once posted a photo from a webside where you rate characters' hottness or smth (it was with the celtic guardian). Could you tell me what webside it was? (I'm bored in school)

Sorry, you’re main point is Yami, I got kida sidetracked there, in that case, yes I absolutely agree that fanon s0 yami is misinterpreted
No problem at all! I like reading someone’s whole train of thought, and I enjoyed reading yours. And I definitely agree that there’s a much more interesting discussion to be had in the creation of the items and what that means for the characterization of the people responsible. We don’t get into the uh... soylent gold very often. xD
