ZoLu Week Day 6 - Pain

"How did you survive taking Luffy's pain back then?" Brook asked. Thriller Bark wasn't even a spot on their horizon, however what Brook had seen there was still on his mind, so Brook sought out a moment alone with Zoro. He sought Zoro out as Zoro was on watch in the observatory, for he had to know the answer. "While I'm glad you're alive, no one could have survived that. How did you?"

"How?" Zoro asked. He looked out the window, in the direction he believed Thriller Bark to be in. How had he walked out of Thriller Bark alive? Luffy's pain was unbearable. Brook was right, there was no way Zoro should have survived. However, when Zoro had done it, he wasn't thinking about himself or his chances of survival. He'd only thought about Luffy. Knowing Luffy had been in so much pain was unbearable, and knowing he could loose Luffy was worse. Knowing that taking all this torture insured Luffy would survive, knowing that his friends would be safe... Knowing that even if he died, Luffy wouldn't. Luffy would keep going, Luffy would achieve his dream, Luffy would live... Knowing all of that, knowing Luffy would escape unharmed... well, how could anything ever hurt Zoro if he knew he was protecting Luffy?

Zoro looked away from the window, meeting Brook's gaze. How had he survived? Well, that answer was simple.

"It was love."

Somewhere in Time

ZoLu Week 2017  Day 3: Soulmate AU 

When you meet your soulmate, time stops for a month for everyone besides you two. 

It wasn’t uncommon to see two or more people shaking hands and smiling, and then vanishing before everyone’s eyes, or to see two or more people appear seemingly out of nowhere, smiling and laughing. Businesses often saved food---For Time-Stopped Lovers---on platters, and some hotels had a room set aside for such occasions, complete with clean sheets and chocolates. 

Strangers were greeted tentatively, no one knowing when time would stop for them---or who it would stop for, rather. Nonetheless, many were eager to meet their soulmate, to have that month with them and... 

“And I’m saying, why can’t you play pranks on people when time’s frozen?” Usopp said in exasperation. He hadn’t yet met his soulmate, if he had one, and was at lunch with Nami and Luffy. 

“I’m telling you, no one knows,” Nami said, equally exasperated. She had met her soulmate a year ago. “Whatever part of the universe made this rule, it apparently also made the rule that living things can’t be messed with when time’s stopped. You can’t move people or animals, and I’m guessing you can’t hurt them, either.” 

Luffy laughed. He hadn’t met his soulmate, either, but wasn’t in any hurry to do so. “So, how many things did you steal during your month, Nami?” he asked. 

“It’s not stealing if I put them back before the month was up,” Nami said primly. She checked her watch. “Honestly, he has the worst sense of direction . . .” 

“Your friend Zoro?” Luffy said. 

“He’s worse than you. He was supposed to be here by now. We might as well order our food.” 

“Typical,” Usopp said, shaking his head. “Back to what I was saying, though, do you age when you have your month?” 

“Probably not, if time’s stopped.” 

Usopp gasped. “Nami, you have a gray hair! You did age!” 

Nami hit him. Luffy laughed, and then looked behind him when he heard a commotion. Someone had knocked over a chair; they quickly set it up again (backwards), apologized, and went in the direction of their table. 

“Sorry I’m late,” he said. “This place is really hidden.” He sat next to Nami, rubbing his green hair as if he’d hit his head. 

“About time,” Nami said, rolling her eyes. “Introduce yourself.” 

“Hey, I’m Zoro,” Zoro said with a nod to Luffy. 

“I’m Luffy,” Luffy responded, grinning. “Nice to meet you!” 

And just like that, the restaurant went dead quiet. Their eyes widened and they looked around. Everyone was frozen in place like statues, not even blinking, and a bird outside was frozen mid-flight. 

“Oh.” 

“Oh.” 

Zoro stared at his lap, rubbing the back of his neck. “Well, um . . . I’ll set my watch so we know when this ends . . .” 

“Let’s go get some free food!” Luffy exclaimed, jumping up and knocking his chair over. “And a really nice hotel bed! They always look so soft! Come on!” 

“We gotta make sure to be back here in time for lunch next month!” Zoro exclaimed, standing hastily and hurrying after him as Luffy ran for the door. “We can’t be in the next city over when time starts again---” 

Luffy grabbed Zoro’s hand, and Zoro fell silent, feeling how warm and small it was in his own. 

“Let’s go,” he insisted. 

Before their eyes, Luffy and Zoro vanished, and Usopp and Nami jumped. 

“They were soul---? Oh, if they’re not back soon, I’m going to kill them,” Nami hissed. 

“I didn’t think Luffy had a soulmate,” Usopp said in wonder. 

Hurried footsteps caught their attention and they found Luffy and Zoro coming towards them, wearing smiles and different clothes. 

“Were you waiting long?” Luffy asked cheerfully as they sat down. 

“Just a few seconds,” Usopp said. “How was it? What did you do? Where did you go?” 

Luffy and Zoro looked at each other and smiled.
