Sam(s)
Post-a voice in the dark
Aka Five finally shows some goddamn vulnerability
Archie: You know Sam, Runner 5 and I make a really great team. You should send us out together on missions more often!
Five: *nodding* Yeah, that's a good idea..!
Sam, watching this all play out:
Archie: *shamelessly flirting with Jamie*
Sam: we all know what you're doing
Archie:
Someone stole Sam's jacket~
All I Hold Dear
Five jogged noiselessly through the old store, looking for anything salvageable in the wreckage. She had already grabbed the necessary supplies Abel so desperately needed, and was now poking around different areas of the store for any other supplies or entertainment.
"Alright Five, you're still in the clear," Sam's voice crackled though Five's headset. "You can keep looking around if you'd like."
She nodded, despite knowing that Sam couldn't see her.
"Aw, come on, don't do that. You're shaking up the camera," Sam complained, much to Five's amusement.
"So.. it would bother you if I did this?" She bobbed her head around, earning a groan from Sam. She gave a gentle laugh, going back to rummaging through a few shelves that had been knocked over.
"Maybe try over in that section? You might find something for the children or a game for everyone to play," Sam suggested.
Five made her way to the other area, immediately spotting dozens of stuffed animals. She grinned broadly, making a beeline for them.
"Sam, look!" She exclaimed gleefully, eagerly digging through the pile. "I wonder if there's a-" her breath hitched as she cut herself off. Five's face fell as the joy she felt moments ago was quickly sucked out of her.
"Five? Runner Five, what's- oh…" Sam sighed sympathetically as he watched Five reach in with trembling hands to grab a little plush chicken for the pile. "Hey, why don't you.. why don't you come on back?"
Five tried to steady her breathing, blinking back the tears that quickly filled her eyes. "No, I'm- I'm fine, I can keep going."
"You're not bloody fine!" Sam accused. "Come on home, Five. You've already got everything we need anyways." He gave another sigh. "And you can- you can bring the chicken back too if you'd like."
Five said nothing, though she left the store, chicken in hand. Her run back to Abel was uneventful, albeit rather quiet.
"Raise the gates!" Sam ordered as he saw Five nearing the gate. He placed his headset down and ran to meet her.
Five slowed her pace as she made it through the gates, barely processing the gates closing behind her, or Sam approaching her. Her gaze was firmly fixed on the chicken in her still-shaking hands. This was stupid, she thought. Who the hell gets upset over a stupid toy?
"Five!" Sam called, finally reaching his runner. She looked up at him, her eyes glazed over with emotion. His heart broke to see Five in such a state.
"Archie…" she whispered in a broken voice. Sam's heart ached, he longed to take away the pain she felt. He couldn't stand to see the person he loved like this.
"Hey, I know. It's alright," he spoke softly, slowly moving forward to envelop Five in a tight hug. "I'm so sorry."
Five's heart pounded hard against her chest, her breathing more labored. No way would she cry. Not right here, not right now, and certainly not over something as silly as a stuffed animal. She tried to say something, anything, to tell Sam that she was alright, but all that came out was a strangled sob. She threw her arms around Sam, who held her like she would break into pieces if he let go.
"I'm gonna take you back to the com shack with me, alright?" Sam asked softly, earning a nod from Five. He gently lifted her into his arms, walking back to the shack. Five wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. Her legs wrapped tightly around his torso for support.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, laughing bitterly. "This is so stupid…"
Upon reentering the com shack, Sam sat down in his chair, Five on his lap. He shook his head, slowly reaching out to cup her face. "It's not stupid, it's just your way of grieving. Let yourself be sad, she was your friend and you loved her." Sam felt a pang in his heart as he said those words, but he gave a sympathetic smile nonetheless.
Five smiled sadly at Sam, who brushed a tear away with his thumb before it could cascade down her cheek. "But there's no time to be upset, not when there's things that need to be done."
"You can't expect yourself to keep running missions like before, you need time. I'm sure everyone would be more than willing to give you a couple weeks off."
"I can't, I just-" she gave a frustrated sigh, pulling out her hair tie and shaking out her hair before running a hand through it. "This is how I'm.. dealing with it. If I'm not running-" she took a breath, then shook her head.
"Well, just know I'm always here for you. Even if I can't help much," he sighed. Five nodded, resting her head against Sam's chest.
"Just you being here helps," she replied. Five tilting her head up, giving Sam a smile. "And I love you way more than I loved Archie."
Sam let out a soft chuckle, pulling Five closer and pressing a soft kiss on her forehead. She nuzzled against his chest, one hand gripping the chicken, the other grasping Sam's sweatshirt. Sam's arms wrapped around her loosely as he put his headset back on to guide more runners on supply runs.
