CRUSTECEA!

The lobby outside my lab room at USYD is filled with a collection of preserved animals, I thought you guys might like to take a look at some of the marine-related displays.

First up, CRUSTACEA! These large aquatic arthropods are defined by their hard shells, segmented bodies and jointed appendages. The subphylum includes crabs, lobsters, shrimp, barnacles, and copepods. Note the Giant Isopod on the bottom! These deep sea scavengers live from 260-540 m below sea level, and eat anything that ends up on the seafloor!

Fun fact: the crustecean order Decapoda is also known as the ‘tasty order’ because these are the crustaceans which humans normally eat.

The Dead Zoo Dublin

Caught on camera, that’s me working away in the unusually quiet Dead Zoo Natural History Museum, Dublin. Normally the museum is packed with visitors and school trips. Can you spot the real Zebra?

One of the coolest hidden features on UM's campus is the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum. The museum contains more than 24,000 specimens of vertebrates, including birds, mammals and fish. It is the largest zoological collection in Montana and one of the major zoological collections representing the Northern Rocky Mountains.

These photos feature some of the beautiful specimens in the collection, as well as former curator David Dyer and Emily Graslie before she moved her educational YouTube show "The Brain Scoop" to the renowned Field Museum in Chicago.
