first grade zombie class
While observing a first-grade class in Chicago, I learned a lesson about spelling.
Me: Can I see what you wrote down? What do you want to learn about in 2014?
1st Grader: Ninjas. And Zoombis
Me: Ah, zombies. How do you spell zombies?
1st Grader: Easy. Z-O...OMBIS. Zombies.
Me: If you have two O's, then it sounds like zoombies.
1st Grader: Not zoombies, zombies. You know, the dead dudes [pantomimes dead dude].
Me: I know what zombies are. You're spelling zoombies.
1st Grader: Man, you keep mixing them up. Look, zombies. Z-O-O-M-B-I-S. See, you want to write it down? You can use my pencil.
Me: No, it's spelled- [pause] I'll let your teacher figure this one out.
1st Grader: Ok, well if you need help practicing, my desk is over here.
