When life hands you lemons, at least there’s still whisky.

A week ago today I was informed that my contract would not be renewed and I will be jobless after the year’s end. That’s kind of a bummer, but it wasn’t totally expected, given the political nature of my work. But even when you think you’re prepared for such a thing you can still be thrown way off balance when the dismissal process is nothing short of brutally inhumane. 

Consequently it has also been the longest week of my life. From commiserating with my fellow dismissees to some minor wallowing in self-pity to exorcising demons via a violent video game to getting support from all around me and finding a short-term bit of work to keep some money coming it, pretty much everything has happened in a few short days. But leave it to my lovely wife to turn everything around with an early Christmas present. 

Despite not living in Calgary, I’ve previously enjoyed Kensington Wine Market’s annual whisky advent calendar. They always go all-out and make sure to include some very interesting samples. I’ll be attempting once again to blog along each day, because it’s fun!

This Zuidam/Millstone cask strength/single barrel 100% rye is a wild ride, and not just because it’s a bonkers beverage. The last time I was able to hang out with my Scotch-drinking pals one of them brought the Millstone 100 Rye to the party. I did not like it! It had some overwhelming soap, rocks, bubble gum, and rubber hose notes. It was weird, baby! So I approached this first advent offering, which is an exclusive KWM bottling, with some trepidation.

It wasn’t the same, but it also wasn’t your typical whisky. It seemed almost more like a heavily-oaked gin than a whisky. The nose is shot through with pine tree, juniper, orange pith, and potting soil, along with a whole cabinet of spices. Much of that carries over to the tongue, which hits hard with a lot of alcohol burn, warming all the way through to the end. There’s a heap of dill, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, bitter almond, and oak. There’s a real strong gin presence as well, like it was mixed right in with the rye. 

This was a real trip! It could make for some very interesting cocktails, but I probably won’t be rushing to grab ahold of a bottle for myself. However, if you’ve tried just about everything else under the sun, take it for a spin! If nothing else, it’s a unique experience.

Millstone: Peated PX

The Netherlands has a number of distilleries that make whisky. Zuidam, in the south of the Netherlands, is one of them. There usually is an excellent supply at my local liquor store, but today I walked in and bumped into this display holding loads of bottles of the Peated PX version.

I was asked if I wanted a taste and naturally I said yes.

We hebben ons assortiment Zuidam weeral uitgebreid. We hebben een proefvat staan waaruit je de 3 jaar vatgelagerde oude jenever kunt proeven. Zuidam Millstone 8 2000/2009 French Oak (40 %)

Enda en Millstone; denne er også 8 år, men lagret på franske eikefat. Av en eller annen grunn er denne satt ned til 40 % alkohol også.

På nesen plukket jeg først opp noe gjær/brøddeig, så vanilje, nellik, pære, sitrus, røde epler, eiketre og et hint av svart pepper. Smaksmessig fant jeg nellik, vanilje, sitron og karamell, mens avslutningen var ganske såpete og kort, med pære, sitron og et hint av koriander. Med vann kom det til litt malt på nesen, i tillegg til vanilje og et hint av grønn te. Smaken fikk mer sitron, maltsødme og nellik, mens avslutningen med vann ble mer krydrete og noe kortere. Mindre såpe også.

Mindre krydder enn ventet fra et fransk eikefat, og noen skjemmende gjær- og såpenoter. American Oak er etter min mening bedre.

Zuidam Millstone 8 2000/2009 American Oak (43 %)

Det sier seg selv at Nederlands nasjonaldag, Koninginnedag, må feires på en whiskyblogg – og da ikke med genever, men selvsagt med nederlandsk whisky. Zuidam ble grunnlagt i 1974, og produserte stort sett gin, vodka og nettopp genever fram til 1998, da de begynte med whisky under navnet Millstone. De holder også på med interessante prosjekter som en pot still-destillert rye, for øvrig. Her skal det først handle om en 8 år gammel single malt lagret på amerikansk eik.

På nesen plukket jeg opp vanilje, brent karamell, appelsinskall, smeltet smør og et hint av mandler. Smaken var preget av maltsødme, vanilje, sjokolade, eiketre og så litt krydder mot avslutningen. Søt. Avslutningen var søt, med karamell, hint av kirsebær, vanilje og eiketre. Halvlang, med en litt såpete munnfølelse. Gradvis mer trebitterhet. Med vann kom det til mer karamell på nesen, smaken fikk tilført enda mer vanilje, mens eikepreget avtok noe. Avslutningen ble enda søtere, med brent karamell og litt mandel.

En litt vel søt whisky etter min smak, og kanskje litt endimensjonal og flat. Likevel en åtteåring som er fullt på høyde med veldig mye annet på den alderen, også fra selveste Skottland.
