It had been the rank waft of cigarette smoke that tipped her off to her unwelcome follower. She wouldn’t have noticed him, otherwise; other people were not usually on her radar. But now she could feel the bearded man watching her, a crawling, burning sensation worse than most stares. Closer and closer, his footsteps scraping against the sidewalk.
Blind panic eclipsed any rational thought. Eve turned the corner and ran. Through back alleys, between little crevices until a dumpster propped against a fence served as a ladder into a vacant lot. Her escape route was so erratic that she herself had no idea where the fuck she was. Maybe her nicotine-addicted pursuer didn’t know, either. Mission success?
Eve found a porch and tucked herself next to the wall, brickwork scratching the fabric of her hoodie. It didn’t look like anyone was around, and the windows and doors were boarded up. Not that she’d want to get inside. She could hide outside near the porch, she decided. Just for a while, until she could use her phone’s GPS to make her way back home.
A very sudden noise cut through her senses made her startle. It was nearby; closer than she expected - her pursuer? An angry squatter pumped up on red ice? A serial killer? All she could do is freeze, a deer in the headlights with her phone in her hand. She opened her mouth but nothing of real substance came out, except-
“Oh fuck-”
