Awesome Job on the New Kindle! , by Michael K. Lake “[email protected]” (Marshfield, MO United States) , July 7 2011
I finally was able to upgrade to the new Kindle. What an improvement! (Even though I really loved V 1.0). The new E-Ink Pearl display is very easy on my eyes. Being in my 50′s with bifocals, some displays are difficult to see and can tire my eyes. Not the new Kindle. I have already enjoyed many hours of reading pleasure and plan to use it instead of my iPad for my eyes’ sakes. This version is a serious device for any avid learner!

Still the best , by Cor , July 7 2011
Last month I bought the Kindle 3. I chose this e-reader instead of the newly available Nook Touch, also with pearl screen. That’s not only because the supposed advantages of a touchscreen didn’t convince me. I read in a comparison review that the new Nook Touch hyphenates a lot and the rendering could have been a little smoother. That being said I already own an IPad and also an IPad 2 and I’ve become very aware of the major drawback of a touchscreen. Those yuckie fingers on my e-reader screen? No, thanks. I would keep wiping them off as I do now. The keyboard and directional keys work just fine with me. The reading experience is really awesome. That’s what I bought the Kindle for in the first place. I have bought a lot of books for my IPad that I still haven’t read but unfortunately since of late reading on the iPad wears me o ut. So, I’m very happy with my Kindle.

Kindle or Nook? That is the question…no more. , by musicfan “musicfan” , July 7 2011
I bought my Kindle 3G a few weeks ago and it was a whole new experience for me. Originally, I swore I’d never go for a reader over a real book (and I still love feeling a book in my hands). But, eventually, I started thinking about buying one. I pondered on it for a few months until my sister sent my mother a Kindle 3G as a gift. My parents being technologically what they are, I was the one mom turned to for help setting up her Kindle. That sold me on it (except she had the graphite one, I got the white one and LOVE it). I also got the basic leather case and my Kindle looks amazing in it. And the text on the screen looks amazing…almost surreal, like I could almost touch it and feel the paper! But, alas, it is not a touch screen, which brings me to what’s next.
A few things I was still missing with my Kindle: color, a touch screen and easier internet access. After about a month of more research, I broke down and bought a Nook Color. By now I was used to my Kindle, so the Nook Color almost felt too much like an electronic gadget which, interestingly, the Kindle never did. But, here was the major deal breaker: the Nook hurt my eyes! After a couple of hours, my eyes felt like they wanted to jump off their sockets. That was a massive surprise to me (not to mention heartbreak, because I REALLY liked the Nook). But, I realized I could not read on it, which is ultimately why we want a READER. I know, I know, people buy the readers then complain it does not do what an iPAD does, but really, I want a reader, not an iPAD.
While the Nook Color offers more versatility than the Kindle, it cannot seem to compete with it as a reader. And I could not justify spending $300 (the Nook cost plus Best Buy’s extended warranty – if you read the Nook reviews you know you need one) for a reader I could not read. Sure, I’d have great internet on the go (as long as I find a hot spot for it, it is not 3G), play games, have great color….but the battery lasts about 8 hours and my eyes cannot even read on it past two.
So, it took me actually owning a Nook to realize I could not use a back lit reader. Even after all my research. In part because everyone loves their Kindle and everyone loves their Nook, so it was hard to make up my mind since few people actually gave one up for the other (and some seem to own BOTH). For me, I now realize nothing beats eInk. I can read my Kindle in bed, but had a hard time staring at the Nook screen in a low lit room, even when lowering the screen’s brightness. I can read my Kindle for hours with no eye strain, but could not handle the Nook for more than two. And one thing I noticed with the Nook Color: it was heavy! My Kindle, leather case and all, is lighter than a Nook Color on its own.
Something else I realized while messing about with my Nook Color. I had not noticed until then just how nice the Kindle felt in my hands. I never thought I would feel about a reader the way I feel about a physical book, but the Kindle comes close. Especially when in a leather case. The Nook never felt anything other than an electronic gadget. And I actually was longing for my Kindle while trying to feel my way around my Nook Color.
So, my Nook goes back and I keep my Kindle. Eventually, I am sure that Amazon will release an eInk Kindle Color with touch screen. And I’ll be right there to buy it. Until then, I’ll keep my Kindle 3G. I LOVE IT! Now, if only Amazon offered you a chance to put books you previously bought with them into it for free, like when you buy an iPOD you can put into it your CD collection, that would be amazing!

You Lose What it Means to Read a Book and Pay More , by George Rausch (Los Angeles, CA USA) , July 7 2011
I got my Kindle the other day and within 15 minutes knew that it wasn’t right for me. The fact that there are no page numbers really detaches me from feeling accomplished about getting through a book. Yes, they give you “percentage complete” numbers, but it mentally reduces books into another piece of code, not a piece of literature.
What really threw me for a loop was the fact that eBooks cost MORE (more often than not) than paperbacks. I’d rather buy a paperback, pay less and be able to throw it around and not worry about it getting damaged or stolen while reading outside or traveling.
If you’re an avid reader, or you’re someone who reads a lot of PDFs, or just need the ability to carry a lot of books with you, the Kindle may be for you. But for someone who reads casually and enjoys a real book and not wanting to pay more, the Kindle is merely a toy which removes the real enjoyment of reading a book.

I feel like my Amazon Kindle has opened up the world to me. I have just about any book at my finger tips. I have learned so much since I received this as a gift. However, I choose to use it just for reading. I don’t want to be distracted with games or with surfing the internet, so I just use it to read, and read and read some more!! I love it!

i love my kindle , by Lori Tan “arttulip” (kansas) , July 7 2011
I love my kindle. I can’t believe I waited so long to use this technology. Since purchasing the kindle I have read so much more. I have filled all those wasted moments in a day with reading. The only thing I don’t like about the kindle is that the pages aren’t numbered. Sometimes I want to look back at something I have read and I have to go through each page to find it. Other than that it’s an awesome product.

Love the product! , by A. Carol “California Shopper” (Orange County, CA) , July 7 2011
I purchased a Kindle when they were first introduced by Amazon. As I travel extensively in the US for business, it was wonderful for the road. I must tell you that my Kindle went through a lot of “wear & tear” during my travels. Unfortunately after four years the battery was no longer viable & I decided to treat myself to a new one. Much more inexpensive this time around! Amazon has made many innovations in my new Kindle . . . & if possible, I’m enjoying it more than my first one! The print is clearer & I can read anywhere from a bright sunny beach to a poorly lighted airplane/hotel room. I recommend this product to any one who loves to read.

Tried them all – KINDLE is the best!! Rediscover the joy of reading , by 68whiskeyarmymom , July 7 2011
Since 01/2011, I have purchased 3 other readers and none satisfied my reading needs. Then one day, a Kindle 3 G showed up at my door (a mothers day gift from my deployed son). I charged it, Amazon registered it for me, and within seconds I was using it effectively – without having to read one word from the owners manual. The Kindle is as intuitive as reading a book – incredibly light, downloads are lightning fast, has a multitude of books to pick from (many, many more than the other e readers). The new screen is sooooo incredible, it’s like reading a book – but better. The free 3G capability is wonderful (I downloaded a book while waiting in line for a roller coaster!!). The free 3 G is even worth putting up with the ads that play while my kindle sleeps (these ads – by the way – do not seem to use any battery power). There are only three things that would make this Kindle the perfect companion: 1) the ability to back light the screen, or a light built right into the kindle design (for night reading) 2)The ability to surf the web in color and 3) a back scratching application!!! The arrival of this Kindle 3G has re ignited my passion for reading!!! thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Not that much good for PDF files , by Neeraj Gupta , July 7 2011
Kindle is good only for proprietary format “Kindle” books, doesn’t work that much well with other standard formats specially PDF that is used world wide. Even I had a discussion with one professor from NCERT and I told him about converting school books to kindle format. He told me that it is proprietary format and users will be bound to use particular piece of hardware from particular company (Amazaon).
Also, you cannot properly increase the font / display of PDF in Kindle. If you will zoom it, it will give you a sort of rectangle and you can zoom only that portion. This does not make it readable, as you have adjust too much left, right, up and down.
If you wish to you read only and only kindle books then it is good choice. PDF management is quite limited.

(Mostly) Untethered from a Computer, Thanks to Kindle , by Railrho (Boston, MA) , July 7 2011
When I’m not at work, I almost exclusively use a Kindle for home reading. I do check my email at home using a PC (the Kindle is clunky for this), but EVERYTHING else I read on a Kindle: news, books, blogs, reports, etc.
I spend a few bucks a month for some of Amazon’s wireless feeds, and I subscribe to another free service that provides the same thing. I also subscribe to an inexpensive service that provides MOBI downloads of customized Kindle content. (These MOBI downloads don’t incur document charges from Amazon).
In short, I don’t miss my PC at home one bit, thanks to the Kindle. I had no idea that the Kindle would provide this much freedom from my PC, but it does.

Money well spent , by S. Saxena (Seattle, WA USA) , July 7 2011
I bought the Kindle 3 as a gift for my wife. She fell in love with this device instantly. It is very light weight, portable and most importantly usable. It was very easy to get started and works pretty fast on a Wi-Fi. The features like text to speech comes very handy too especially with a small baby. When not reading she use Kindle to play music using the experimental tools available.

I’ve had my Kindle Wi-Fi with special offers for a week now and absolutely love it. The only thing i want to add to what has already been said is that I don’t use a wireless connection with mine, only USB and not only have I had zero difficulty doing anything and everything I want to do but I HAVE YET TO SEE THE FIRST ADVERTISEMENT! I am so glad I didn’t waste that 25 bucks.
