Holly (top) and Honey (bottom). Honey, having never slept in this spot before, has now decided it is HER spot and sleeps there every day so that Holly can't!

You can really see how different their faces are in these photos. Holly has a very round face with a square muzzle, slightly rounded ears and a soft facial expression. Honey has a pointier face and muzzle with wide, pointed ears and often has a frowny/grumpy expression.

Hi! I was wondering, what makes leaving out water different from leaving out food? Is there a difference in how foxes treat the two sources?

Yes.

With food foxes have tons of natural options. If one food source isn't available or a species they hunt has low numbers they can just switch to another food source. They can't do that with water. If water dries up then they can't just switch to a different liquid.

In urban areas specifically, water can be very hard to come by as there's often not any natural water sources, or water sources may be very polluted. As a result dehydration is a common cause of death for urban animals, especially in summer.

Water also doesn't attract foxes in the same way food does. Foxes will make a mental note of reliable water sources in their territory and visit them when they're thirsty, but they won't hang around waiting for more water. Visiting water is just part of their normal activities. With food foxes will hang around the same area for hours waiting for that food. Even when they get the food they will continue hanging around hoping for more as they can bury any excess food they don't want to eat right away. This means all their activities get condensed into one small area.

They will also reduce their territory size in response to being fed as they don't need a large territory if most of their food comes from one or two people. This can be a problem if those people then stop feeding as the fox will both be less adept at finding other food and have less area to hunt in. Feeding also allows more foxes to survive and live in a smaller area, leading to greater conflict and more disease spread. Water doesn't do that as more water doesn't = more foxes. Water bowls do need to be kept clean to avoid disease though.

One last thing is foxes wont become habituated to people over water. They will visit a pond or water bowl then leave, but they don't associate it in any way with people. Food they do learn to associate with people, especially when they see people putting the food out, and so become more tame in response in the hopes of getting more food.
