How to Support a Depressed Friend or Partner
1. Find out the kind of depression they are suffering from. Symptoms of clinical depression include sleep difficulties, loss of appetite, a desire to isolate themselves, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, suicidal tendencies and an inability to determine the cause of their depression. Those with situational depression may have some of the same symptoms but they generally know why they feel as they do, and once the issue is resolved, they are able to function normally again.
2. Be available to listen, or just be there for them. Sometimes you don’t need to say a word. Don’t offer opinions or advice; don’t judge them; be patient and understanding; be empathic, gentle and compassionate.
3. Take them out of their environment as a change of scenery can help to change our mood. It doesn’t have to be wildly exciting – just a walk by the river or a coffee at the mall is often enough to shift things a bit.
4. Don’t comment on their lifestyle (habits and patterns). Comments like “You ought to try and sleep more … or change your diet … or exercise more … are likely to shut the person down. These are often beyond the person’s control.
5. Encourage your friend to seek professional help. A friend or family member can be a real lifeline; but objective support from a professional counsellor can help them deal with the cause in a more effective way.
Paintings by Bo Bartlett
Bo Bartlett (b.1955) is an American realist with a modernist vision. His paintings are well within the tradition of American realism as defined by artists such as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth. Like these artists, Bartlett looks at America’s heart - its land and its people and describes the beauty he finds in everyday life. His paintings celebrate the underlying epic nature of the commonplace and the personal significance of the extraordinary.

The Amazing Work of Larry Landolfi
When I moved to Kodiak, Alaska in May of 1980, I wasn’t there a day when I called my dad (the ‘photo-bug’ of the family) and told him to send me a camera, any camera, and send it quick. The camera was from a camera company I’d never heard of before or since (Bessler), but more importantly I was well on my way into the wonderful world of photography. Astronomy has always been another 'love of my life’, and I think it shows in a lot of the composite photos shown here.
About a dozen years ago my youngest brother Joe told me I should get into computers and this thing called Photoshop. Told me it was right up my alley in what I tried to take 'in camera’. I flat out told him I already had 2 hobbies that were costing me thousands of dollars and really couldn’t afford another one. So glad I never took my own advice. Larry Landolfi I’ve been a successful stock photographer at ScienceSource.com (formerly PhotoResearchers.com) since 1996. http://images.sciencesource.com/search?api=110875667&pg=1 Praise be to God for all the wonders of the universe and on this beautiful, temporary home called Earth.

Magical Realism Paintings from Alex Alemany
Painting in self-defence
We are living in a cultural structure, whose complexity is greater than our personal capacity to understand it. We have built it, but we do no longer have the resources, knowledge and the necessary ability to organize, legislate and manage these liberal-democratic societies and all their cultural problems. Neither to understand what is happening and what can be done to solve it. The human being cannot understand the world that has created. In regard to art, we meekly support continuous victory of promotion and marketing on knowledge and values. Due to market alchemy, the poverty of artistic preparation has become a powerful tool for the best “artistic expression” of time, in consumerist terms. Facebook

Masterclass in Realism from the late great Andrew Wyeth
Andrew Newell Wyeth was born on July 12, 1917 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Wyeth was primarily a realist painter. Andrew Wyeth’s favorite subjects were the land and people around him, both around his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and his summer home in Midcoast Maine. He is perhaps best-known for his painting Christina’s World (1948), currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Andrew Wyeth passed away at the age of 91 on January 16, 2009.
